Electronic Structure Theory Postdoctoral Scholar

Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory
United States, California, Berkeley
1 Cyclotron Road (Show on map)
Jul 27, 2024

Lawrence Berkeley National Lab's (LBNL) Accelerator Technology & Applied Physics (ATAP) Division has an opening for an Electronic Structure Theory Postdoctoral Scholar to join the Fusion Science & Ion Beam Technology Program (FS/IBT) research program team.

In this role, you will perform theoretical research to explore the applications of point defects in semiconductors for quantum information science applications. The focus of the Fusion Science & Ion Beam Technology Program (FS/IBT) research program is to discover new color centers and new ways to control and harness their electronic, optical, and spintronic properties. You will be using advanced electronic structure theory to simulate the excited-state properties of color centers. You will collaborate with a multi-disciplinary experimental team at ATAP Division providing complementary expertise to synthesis and characterization efforts.

This position requires working closely with the research groups in The Molecular Foundry and ATAP Division.

What You Will Do:

  • Contribute technical knowledge in the theory of excited-state dynamics of point defects in semiconductors.
  • Utilize new developments in computational software to predict and understand experimental results.
  • Document and communicate results of work in peer-reviewed-journal publications and in oral presentations, including participation in meetings, conferences, and reviews.
  • Work collaboratively with ATAP Division and UC Berkeley scientists, engineers, other post-doctoral scholars, technicians, operational staff, and students.

What is Required:

  • Recent Ph.D. in Physics, Materials Science, or related field.
  • Knowledge of high-performance computing, density functional theory, and scientific programming.
  • Demonstrated ability to successfully publish research on theoretical studies in quantum optics, condensed matter physics and related areas.
  • Effective oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and in collaboration with professional staff both within and outside Berkeley Lab.
  • Demonstrated analytical, organizational, and multitasking skills.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Knowledge in spin-based quantum computing.

Notes:

  • This is a full-time, 2-year, postdoctoral appointment with the possibility of renewal based upon satisfactory job performance, continuing availability of funds and ongoing operational needs. You must have less than 3 years of paid postdoctoral experience. Salary for Postdoctoral positions depends on years of experience post-degree.
  • The monthly salary range for this position is $ 5,374 - $7,510 and is expected to start at $6,542 or above. Postdoctoral positions are paid on a step schedule per union contract and salaries will be predetermined based on postdoctoral step rates. Each step represents one full year of completed post-Ph.D. postdoctoral experience.
  • This position may be subject to a background check. Any convictions will be evaluated to determine if they directly relate to the responsibilities and requirements of the position. Having a conviction history will not automatically disqualify an applicant from being considered for employment.
  • Work will be primarily performed at: Lawrence Berkeley National Lab, 1 Cyclotron Road, Berkeley, CA.
