The Role:

This position is to supervise employees in the preparation, production, service, sales, and maintenance activities and participates in all food service activities. Assists in providing supervision, direction, training, and customer service standards to all levels of staffing that support Dining Operations. Position works in conjunction with all service managers, supervisors, Chefs, and production staff to build staff and student schedules within budget parameters and according to business needs. Supervisor will maintain, update, receive and provide communication regarding scheduling, as well as monitor student and staff call outs. Will provide a daily overview of operational and marketing needs as required. All employees are expected to support CWU's commitment to diversity and to bring and support inclusion into the university environment.

Job Duties

Operations Support:
- Schedule employee work hours/shifts; monitor hours worked; approve payable time and absence requests.
- Monitor vacation and cyclic calendars to ensure schedules reflect approved time off.
- Monitor and track employee callouts and record dates and information in scheduling program. Perform effective and timely follow up with students who have excessive absenteeism as needed. Report staff issues to their direct supervisors for follow up.
- Reassign student staff if a specific need or service deficiency is noticed. Reduce staff if anticipated customer counts require less service staff.
- Assist with daily, weekly, and monthly operations walks to ensure all marketing and digital signage is correct and up to date.
- Submit necessary project requests to Auxiliary Enterprise's Marketing.
- Collaborate with Auxiliary Enterprise's Marketing team to identify and utilize multiple venues for soliciting customer feedback and respond to complaints, questions, and special requests.
- Assist in monitoring compliance with marketing standards and promotions and take corrective actions.
- Ensure GrubHub, in-house POS, and digital signage reflect like menus and pricing.
- Assist with monthly inventory.
- Work with culinary team to input production reports, manage waste logs, and initiate intercompany transfers of product.
- Assists Assistant Manager in administrative functions.
- Support University's commitment to recruiting a diverse work force and providing access to campus services for all students and guests.

Supervision & Customer Service:
- Assigns tasks and monitors daily operations according to established guidelines, procedures, and policies.
- Perform refunds and adjustments for customer transactions when required.
- Assist with GrubHub & OneView operating issues and report areas of concern through help line, or to Dining Operations Manager / General Manager as needed.
- Trains staff in the procedures necessary for daily operations, according to departments training guidelines.
- Clearly defines performance expectations, ensure accountability, and provides ongoing informal feedback, coaching, and mentoring.
- Ensures employees have necessary resources.
- Oversees and directs the work of student staff; serves as mentor, coach, and leader, and resolves complaints or issues.
- Takes corrective action in a timely manner.
- Ensure safe food handling procedures are followed to maintain safe food. Make sure each student employee has a current food handler's permit on site. Schedule food safety and sanitation training on a regular basis.
- Ensure safety policies and procedures are followed to maintain a safe working environment.
- Maintain storage areas for both serving line and supplies. Make sure products are properly cleaned and stored after each use.
- Inspect facilities and initiate maintenance work orders to maintain operating condition of both equipment and buildings.
- Monitor ware-washing activities to ensure dishes and utensils are properly cleaned and sanitized. Direct proper cleanup of all service areas, dining rooms and ware-washing areas. Clean service area, dining room, kitchen, and equipment during breaks in service.
- Ensure sufficient amount of food is properly merchandised and provided to the service lines for presentation to customers.
- Make rounds through service period to monitor that service standards and procedures are followed. Make sure food products served are labeled properly so customers can easily identify them.
- Establish and monitor operating standards for all service. Lead staff in providing exceptional service to customers.
- Promotes professional development opportunities.
- Communicates information to staff on an ongoing basis to influence staff engagement and to be a part of a larger community.

Fiscal Management:
- Assists in maintaining proper controls over resources, including inventory, and labor.
- Assists in training and monitoring performance in unit safety, customer service and food safety.
- Participates in monitoring and reviewing reports, including labor hours vs. sales, production records, staffing schedules and inquiries from Leadership team.
- Contributes to the monitoring performance of products, services, and programs and works collaboratively with management to make adjustments as necessary to meet established sales and service goals.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Minimum of three years of supervisory experience in the food service industry.
  • Experience with Microsoft Office Suite software such as Word, Excel, Access, and e-mail or similar software.
  • Professional verbal and written communication skills to accurately convey important information over the phone, in person, or via email to students and staff.
  • Demonstrated willingness and/or experience working with students and/or co-workers from a wide range of abilities, backgrounds, and experiences.
  • OR Applicable combination of education and/or experience, which demonstrates the ability to perform the essential functions of the position.

Special Conditions of Employment:

  • Ability to obtain valid WA State Food Handler's permit within 30 days of initial hire date.
  • Must be able to obtain SERVSAFE Certification within 6 months of initial hire date.
  • Must be able to work flexible schedule, including weekends.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in an area of college or university food service.
  • Excellent interpersonal, organizational, analytical, communication and problem-solving skills.
  • Experience in active leadership including front of house and back of house staff development and coaching.
  • Prior scheduling and staffing experience.
  • Demonstrated experience with cashiering functions and a POS system.
  • Experience preparing and coaching the preparation of food and beverages to standard recipes or customized for customers, including recipe changes such as temperature, quantity of ingredients or substituted ingredients.
  • Demonstrated participation in programs designed to promote inclusion.
  • A record of promoting inclusivity in the work environment.

Pay, Benefits, & Work Schedule

Salary: This position is based on the range 41 of the Washington State Classification Listing, which has a minimum annual salary of $41,448 and maximum annual salary of $55,224. In accordance with RCW 49.58.110, the above salary reflects the full salary range for this position. Individual placement within the range is based on the candidate's current experience, education, skills, and abilities related to the position.

Schedule/Appointment: Schedule to be determined at time of hire / Dependent on the needs of the department / 11-month cyclic appointment

Working Conditions: Work is performed in an indoor office setting with frequent in-person interactions. It is essential to be able to remain at a desk/computer workstation for prolonged periods of time, perform extensive data entry and other computer-related tasks and create/maintain filing systems for departmental records. Some evening or weekend work and/or occasional travel may be required. While work is performed primarily indoors, at times in hot/cold/noisy/wet areas with some exposure to hazardous equipment and products. Working in temperatures from 0 degrees (freezer) to 350+ degrees (around cooking equipment) is common. Work requires walking and standing (often in a stationary position) for the majority of each shift. Bending/climbing/carrying/pulling/pushing/lifting associated with loading/unloading of supplies and preparation, plating and serving of food is required. This position requires working a schedule that varies based on business needs. This entails attending and participating in events that occur seven days a week and outside normal business hours. Occasional overtime is required, and shift work may be required. May need to drive a service vehicle in congested areas.
