This job performs various laboratory functions to support the department in patient care. Conducts phlebotomy procedures; processes and receives specimens; accessions specimens; distributes specimens; and performs and results specific test procedures.

Education

Required -High School diploma or equivalent

Preferred - Completion of phlebotomy course

Knowledge Skills and Abilities (KSAs)

  • Must have computer skills and dexterity required for data entry and retrieval of patient information. Must be proficient with Windows-style applications and keyboard.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills and the ability to present information clearly and professionally to varying levels of individuals throughout the patient care process.
  • Knowledge of venipuncture procedures

Job Duties

  • Performs specimen collection in accordance with department protocols while meeting established turnaround time goals. Properly labels, centrifuges, initials and/or prepares specimens following specimen handling procedures.
  • Promptly prepares and verifies specimens and forwards them to the work area/reference lab within established time guidelines. Appropriately tracks in the computer system and packages specimens for shipment in a manner that preserves specimen integrity. Processes microbiology specimens according to policy.
  • Manually transcribes patient orders and medical data into the computer system. Checks pending reports and performs exception handling. Demonstrates the ability to follow up on issues to reach a resolution without passing those problems on to others. Promptly and accurately submits quality improvement information when problems or errors arise.
  • Communicates/relays problems to co-workers and escalates to supervisory personnel appropriately. Reviews and follows current policies and procedures as they are updated. Seeks cross-training opportunities and volunteers/participates in departmental activities/tasks. Follows Safety Guidelines at all times. Understands the OIG's compliance requirements for laboratories.
  • Helps facilitate schedule changes by agreeing when asked to work different shifts, days of the weeks, extra hours, areas of the department or different locations, to ensure appropriate staffing levels in the department. Stocks work area, performs assigned inventory of supplies, and seeks additional duties in light workload situations.
  • Adapts behavior to the specific patient population, including but not limited to: respect for privacy, method of introduction to the patient, adapting explanation of service or procedures to be performed, requesting permissions and communication style.
  • Other related duties as required.
