Hiring/Budgeted Salary or Hourly Range: $23.80/hr. - $24.30/hr. This represents the budgeted hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position.

Full Salary Range: $22.00/hr.- $28.48/hr. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience; the budget for the position; and the application of fair, equitable, and consistent pay practices at the University.

Work Location: Onsite, Various Campus Facilities

Working Days and Hours Monday-Friday, 2:00 am - 10:30 am

Brief Summary of Job Duties

Under the supervision of the working Senior Lead Laborer and/or Lead Laborer, performs a wide variety of cleaning tasks and is responsible for minor maintenance and storage of equipment. Required to comply with the Physical Facilities Safety Program.

Required Qualifications

  • Ability to use and care for janitorial supplies and equipment.
  • Able to observe and use safe working conditions.
  • Ability to understand and apply University and Department policies and procedures to specific situations.
  • Ability to exercise sound judgment in solving problems.
  • Ability to accomplish work within deadlines; may handle more than one project at a time.
  • Able to work effectively in a team environment and needs to receive and follow instruction from supervisors.

Desirable Qualifications

  • At least 1 year of custodial experience or combination of experience, training and education, preferably in school or business setting.
  • Ability to communicate orally and in writing in English.
  • Basic skills and knowledge of computer usage.

  • May be required to wear an UCSB-provided uniform.
  • Days and hours may vary to meet the operational needs of the department.
  • Maintain a valid CA driver's license, a clean DMV record and enrollment in the DMV Employer Pull-Notice Program

Job Functions/Percentage of Time/Duties

  • 80% Custodial Services: Provides custodial service for approximately 30,000 SQF in eight hour time. Responds to emergency assignments as needed during regular shift. Dust mops, sweeps, damp mops, wet mops, buffs and high speeds hard and resilient floors. Strips, seals and finishes floors. Operates vacuum cleaners, wet/dry vacuums, floor scrubbing machine and buffer. Cleans stairs, hallways, corridors, walls, moldings, boards, outside steps, terraces, roof decks, window sills and other designated areas. Cleans venetian blinds, radiators, grills, intake and exhaust vents, light fixtures, elevator interiors, tracks and front. Cleans doors, partition glass, showers, glass panels, inside and outside windows at ground level; polishes metal fixtures and handrails. Cleans restrooms, fixtures, mirrors and replenishes soap and paper goods. Empties and cleans ash trays and urns, wastebaskets and other receptacles. May be required to pick up, lift and dump containers into dumpsters. Dusts, cleans and/or waxes cabinets, desks, furnishings, conference tables, wood wall paneling and other woodwork. Cleans chalkboards, erasers and maintains supply of chalk in chalk trays. Performs various cleaning duties per prescribed procedures in clinical areas. Dusts horizontal surfaces, empties trash, polishes metal surfaces, mops floors, cleans office areas. Wears appropriate equipment, gloves, masks, etc. Responsible for minor maintenance and storage of equipment. May haul, load and/or set up chairs, tables, podiums, flags, and bunts for special functions. SKILLS & KNOWLEDGE: Knowledge of correct chemical use and mixture. Knowledge of general custodial duties. Ability to operate vacuums, floor scrubbers, polishers and carpet steam extractors. Ability to determine when repairs are necessary. Ability to follow through and carry out assignments.
  • 10% Safety & Security: Locks unoccupied areas/offices after cleaning. Maintains a functional awareness of the typical hazards that may be encountered at UCSB such as bio-hazards, radiation, chemicals, etc. Follow established procedures for dealing with such potential hazards. Promptly reports accidents on the job, preparing and submitting accident reports. SKILLS & KNOWLEDGE: Ability to safeguard keys. Knowledge of correct chemical use and mixture. Ability to work in gross anatomy and pathological laboratories where human and animal body parts may be exposed to view of worker.
  • 10% Departmental Goals: Establishes and maintains a positive and cooperative working relationship with members of Department and campus community. Communicates effectively orally and in writing. Performs effectively in a service environment. Maintains proficiency at current level and continually updates knowledge through appropriate courses, seminars, publications and contacts with others in the trade. Maintains an acceptable attendance record, punctuality and meeting deadlines. Participates in training sessions and seminars. SKILLS & KNOWLEDGE: Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing. Ability to work effectively in an environment subject to frequently changing priorities. Problem-solving skills and sound judgment. Ability to understand and apply University and Departmental policies and procedures.
