Job Summary

Paradise Valley Community College (PVCC) is seeking an Instructional Svc Specialist who assists with technical support for and feasibility determinations to internal and external (rental) events in the venues of the Center for Performing Arts, the M Studio theatre and the amphitheater. Assists the Center for the Performing Arts *Technical Director by providing technical support in the design and construction of sets for plays and musicals; lighting design and operation for events, rentals and performances; design and operation of audio and video. Assists with the maintenance of fine arts facilities including the stage, scene shop, costume shop, and storage areas. Assists with the training and coordination of part-time staff and student workers.

Note: Technical Director is a working title for this area.

Essential Functions

30% Assists with overseeing the use of the facilities and department users; prepares appropriate reports and records; assists with coordinating events in the theatre facility, including enforcement, security and safety measures; assists in preparing labs for dance, music, theatre production and technical theatre classes

30% Provides technical support for areas such as scenery, lighting, costumes, properties, sound and/or special effects as requested by individual users; tasks may include constructing scenery from approved designs; installation and operation of electronic sound equipment (microphone, speakers, etc.); installation and operation lighting systems; constructing costumes and/or properties; cleaning and maintaining theatre and shop equipment

20% Inventories theatre equipment and prepares reports as necessary; purchases materials and supplies

15% Provides oversight and assigns work, schedules, trains and prepares reports on students and part-time employees

5% Conduct facility tours

Minimum Qualifications

Associate's Degree from a regionally accredited institution and one year of advanced program support involving program coordination, preferably in an educational setting.

OR

An equivalent combination of the conferred degree and directly related full-time work experience as described above sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job such as those listed above, unless otherwise subject to any other requirements set forth in law or regulation, may be considered.

Desired Qualifications

1. Bachelor's Degree in Theater or related field

2. Three (3) or more years work experience as a theater technician in professional and/or educational theater

3. Experience as a theatrical designer in one or more of the following ways: scenic design, lighting design, sound design, costume design, and/or properties design

4. Experience in scenic carpentry, scenic painting, lighting installation and operation and/or sound installation and operation

5. Experience working collaboratively with diverse populations, which may include faculty, staff, students, and/or community members

6. Experience as a lead worker or providing oversight to the work of others

7. Experience coordinating technical theater spaces such as a mainstage theater, black box theater, scene shop, costume shop and/or properties shop

Special Working Conditions
  • Possession of a valid State of Arizona Class D Driver's License or other state license required; employee must meet district minimum standards regarding driving:
  • Travel to campus during interview/selection process will be at candidate's own expense
  • MCCCD does not sponsor individuals for any type of work visas
  • May require work off site or in a remote status
  • Will be required to travel or be assigned to all MCCCD locations
  • May require some evenings or weekends
  • May require travel or work at the Black Mountain campus
  • May require prolonged periods of viewing a computer screen
  • Work outdoors in a variety of temperatures and environments
  • May be exposed to hazardous chemicals
  • May require stairs and/or ladders to reach assigned areas along with working at high heights
  • May be required to lift or carry up to #50 lbs.
