Summary

AC Transit is currently recruiting qualified candidates for the position of Machinist. Under general supervision, this position sets-up lathes and operates a variety of specialized metal working machines in order to repair, reconstruct and fabricate bus and/or automotive parts, tools, and related equipment.

Representative Functions

  • Set up and operate lathes and related metal working machinery.
  • Repair, reconstruct and fabricate bus and/or automotive parts, tools, and related equipment.
  • Safely use hand tools such as drills, die-grinders, and related tools used in the repair and fabrication of bus and or/automotive parts, tools, and related items.
  • Set tolerances to as small as .0005 inch using a variety of precision measuring tools such as micrometers and calipers.
  • Develop specifications and/or shop drawings based on information obtained from mechanics, end users, personal observation, and research.
  • Operate hoists and similar equipment in order to move heavy and/or awkward items.
  • Maintain power equipment and hand tools in proper working order, including cleaning, lubricating, and sharpening.
  • Perform related duties as required.

Minimum Qualifications

Education/Training: Equivalent to completion of a recognized machinist apprenticeship program.

Experience: One (1) year of journey-level machinist experience. Experience in the fabrication of automotive components is highly desirable.

Skill In: Set-up and operation of lathes, milling machines, and related metal working equipment; use of precision
measuring devices including micrometers and calipers.

Special Requirements: Must possess a complete set of mechanics hand tools and instruments.

Pension: All AC Transit employees participate in a lifetime defined benefit pension. All employees hired on or after January 1, 2020, may be in the District's Tier II pension plan covered by the Public Employees' Pension Reform Act of 2013 (PEPRA). As such, he/she may be required to contribute a small portion of annual income towards the cost of his/hers District pension.
