Director, Program Development and Clinical Innovation

Ambulatory Services

Position Summary

The Director of Program Development and Clinical Innovation will be responsible for a portfolio of cross-functional initiatives, serving as the subject matter expert for all aspects of analyzing, developing, implementing, and supporting new ambulatory care models and technologies. This individual will leverage a blend of operations and project management experience to expand HSS' world-renowned musculoskeletal care outpatient operations. The ideal candidate will be a versatile leader who enjoys navigating multiple stakeholder relationships, be highly organized, value working with a high degree of freedom, thrive in a fast-paced environment, communicate well, and take true ownership over all related activities.

Reporting to the Assistant Vice President of Strategy and Business Operations and working closely with the Vice President of Service Lines, the Director will help develop the vision, strategy, and operational implementation plan for clinical care programs and technologies. This position will partner with leadership across ambulatory services; including physicians, nursing, patient access, radiology, physical therapy, and operational management teams to further develop care models, implementation playbooks, and outcome measurement tools to achieve near-term goals for the organization while also planning for future developments to scale programs and technologies throughout the enterprise.

The Director will directly oversee enterprise level program operations for their portfolio including, but not limited to, HSS Orthopedics Now and the HSS Spine Center with Stamford Health. The Director will also be supported by an Ambulatory Operations Analyst and will collaborate with the Associate Director of Ambulatory Operations who has a portfolio focusing on operational excellence initiatives of various scales.

Key Responsibilities

    Oversee clinical programs such as, but not limited to, HSS Orthopedics Now, HSS Spine Center with Stamford Health, Lifestyle Medicine, etc. ensuring the programs are running efficiently while developing growth strategy and implementation
  • Perform regular updates to key stakeholders and executive leadership on all clinical program KPIs and future business development strategies
  • Directly manage staff for clinical programs including Office Manager, Care Navigator, etc.
  • Assist with project management of select initiatives (e.g. remote monitoring, HHA integration, program development, etc.)
  • Collaborate with other department leaders to define, prioritize, and develop project initiative scope.
  • Analyze data, including project budgets, risks, and resource allocation
  • Serve as project lead for key initiatives responsible for coordinating progress against established milestones and communicating regular updates to hospital and departmental leadership
  • Maintain detailed project management documentation, map workflows, author project charters, track project progress, implementation matrixes as needed to maintain project progress
  • Responsible for monitoring and controlling projects by performing the work to compare actual performance with planned performance
  • Drive resolution of project risk and issues and escalate as required
  • Identify relevant project metrics- both clinical and operational to measure impact, and translate this data into actionable insights and compelling deliverables for key stakeholders as needed
  • Participate and represent Ambulatory Services and Service Lines within interdepartmental workgroups. Effectively communicate and advocate for physician office operational efficiencies being mindful of impact to day-to-day operations
  • Support the training and operational lift associated with specific projects
  • Support physicians with clinical innovation endeavors including evaluation and adoption of new technology and/or vendors
  • Manage vendor selection efforts, lead technology sourcing and implementation
  • Coordinate internal resources and third parties/vendors for the execution of projects, managing the relationship with all stakeholders
  • Act as central point of contact for all vendor partnerships/integration
  • Represent Ambulatory Services and Service Lines within various technology focused workgroups (Outpatient, Digital Health, Omnichannel, etc.)
  • Develop presentations for various governance groups/leadership meetings as well as share existing digital efforts and seek input from clinical and operational leaders on new ones
  • Support leadership in managing governance teams established for outpatient operations and access
  • Build rapport and instill confidence with the departmental leadership, Chiefs, physicians, senior leadership, and staff throughout the organization


Qualifications

Skills and Experience - Required

  • Bachelors required, Masters preferred
  • At least five (5) years of related experienced
  • Ability to manage multiple initiatives with tight deadlines in an environment of constant change with a continuous improvement mindset
  • Demonstrated track record of project managing cross-departmental initiatives and programs, from design to execution in expedited timeframes in a matrix organization
  • High emotional intelligence and ability to collaborate with both clinical and administrative stakeholders
  • Highly developed critical thinking skills with the ability to find creative and innovative solutions to complex problems and issues
  • Superior written and oral communication skills with the ability to exude confidence and credibility when interacting with people internally and externally on behalf of HSS
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively provide strategic direction and implement creative strategies in a solidly matrixed, complex organizational environment that is both consensus- and mission-driven
  • Ability to model the basic values and principles of Hospital for Special Surgery
  • An entrepreneurial spirit and a sense of humor

Skills and Experience - Preferred

  • Three (3) or more years of experience leading and developing employees
  • Experience working with clinical programs that are scales across multiple locations or departments
  • Excellent communication, problem-solving, and process management skills
  • Demonstrated ability to translate complex issues into solutions, combined with an innovative and progressive approach transforming care using industry leading technologies
  • Ability to effectively influence in the absence of authority
  • Strong organizational and leadership skills
  • Ability to collaborate effectively and follow-up to ensure achievement of desired outcomes and results
