The Marlboro Institute for Liberal Arts & Interdisciplinary Studies at Emerson College is looking to fill one section of Africana Thought and Practice (IN 211) and one section of Special Topics in World History: Black Women's Activism in the Americas (HI 206) for the Fall 2023 semester, September 5 -December 18, 2023.is an interdisciplinary course that introduces students to the intellectual, political, and cultural contributions of figures such as W.E.B. Du Bois, Angela Davis, Frantz Fanon, and Steven Biko. Through engagement of a variety of texts (including literature, memoir, and film), students explore topics such as Pan-Africanism, black feminism, anti-colonial movements, and the politics of representation. This course fulfills the and and contributes to a number of interdisciplinary minors , , and ). Black Women's Activism in the Americas is a . Such topics focus on historical research drawing on multi-pronged research methods, for example: working with primary and secondary sources, material culture, oral history, and historiography. This offering could be shaped to the applicant's interest using the description below or designed to otherwise engage with questions of race, gender, and sexuality in Latin America and the Caribbean. Existing description: Black Women's Activism in the Americas traces the activism of Black women in the Americas from the late nineteenth century and into our present moment. Some of the key questions that will guide our discussion include: What were the socio-economic and political realities that propelled Black women to take on activist roles at the communal, national, and international levels? What types of challenges did they encounter? What did success look like? Did they find allies? And what did their work look like across different centuries and both within and across nation-state borders? The work of historians, cultural critics, organizers, social media scholars, poets, and teachers, to name a few, will guide our examination of these questions. This course fulfills the and contributes to the For the Fall 2023 term, Africana Thought and Practice is scheduled to meet twice a week on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10-11:45am and Black Women's Activism in the Americas is scheduled to meet twice a week on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 12-1:45pm. Each course is scheduled to meet a total of 28 times. Enrollment is capped at 30 students for each of these sections and all courses will take place in person on the Boston campus. Applicants can apply to teach one or both available courses. The successful candidate must have the ability to work effectively with faculty, students, and staff from diverse backgrounds.
