DESCRIPTION

The Department of Medicine (DoM) is the largest department within the UCSD School of Medicine (SoM) and is responsible for fulfilling its teaching, research, and clinical missions. DoM employees approximately 500 salaried faculty, nearly 200 academic appointees, and more than 300 residents, fellows, and postdocs, supported by almost 1,000 staff members.

Under supervision, Staff Research Associate will assist and participate in molecular biology and cell/tissue culture analysis. Staff Research Associate will support the laboratory and research initiatives under Dr. Goren. The position includes design and performance of PCR and quantitative real-time PCR experiments and associated data analysis and execute chromatin immunoprecipitation (ChIP) followed by deep sequencing (ChIP-seq) experiments using an automated liquid handler. Staff Research Associate will consult and collaborate with principal investigator (PI) on experimental design, interpretation of results, and overall research direction. Staff Research Associate will assist and remain up to date on current literature and novel methods, contribute to experiment planning, and protocol development and will provide general lab support including preparation of buffers, maintenance of tissue culture area, and managing supplies for laboratory as well as other duties as assigned.

Additionally, the individual will serve as a point person (in addition to others in the Lab) for receiving and inventorying of supplies. Staff Research Associate will assist and perform general laboratory maintenance and, together with others in the Lab, act as Safety and Chemical Hygiene Officer. Duties include purchasing supplies, inspecting and maintaining lab equipment, working with outside vendors, keeping inventory of reagents, supplies and protocols used in the lab, orienting new employees to laboratory practices, and guiding lab personnel in research safety training.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • Theoretical knowledge of Molecular Biology, Biochemistry and/or genetics and genomics theory.

  • Experience with basic laboratory equipment (centrifuges: high-speed, ultra and microcentrifuge, light microscopes, balances, pH meter, incubators spectrophotometers, and electrophoresis apparatus).

  • Experience with PC and Apple computers. Familiarity with Microsoft Office, and experience with basic database management.

  • Experience in general laboratory housekeeping procedures including maintaining inventory and equipment, ordering supplies, preparing solutions, maintaining a clean and safe laboratory environment.

  • Knowledge and experience in safe handling of biohazardous materials (human tissues and body fluids). Knowledge of EH&S regulations and requirements for laboratory safety, including methods for handling, cleaning and disposal of waste.

  • Demonstrated ability to work independently to effectively prioritize tasks and work with a large number of samples with accuracy and efficiency.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Experience performing ChIP-qPCR, ChIP-seq, ATAC-seq or similar.
  • Experience with protein extraction and Western Blotting techniques.
  • Familiarity with statistical analysis and data computations.
  • Ability to follow federal, state, and university regulations for the conduct of scientific research.
  • Expertise in establishing, writing and training of Standard Operating Procedures.

Pay Transparency Act

Annual Full Pay Range: $51,949 - $61,972 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)

Hourly Equivalent: $24.88 - $29.68

Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The Hiring Pay Scale referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position. The Annual Full Pay Range may be broader than what the University anticipates to pay for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
