Job Description

Would you like to get in on the ground floor of an exciting new Shipping Container Recapitalization project as a Mechanical Engineer This position may be for you!

The Naval Nuclear Laboratory, Shipping Containers Recapitalization (SCR) Unit is seeking multiple mechanical engineers to join the new group that will be designing and analyzing the next generation fuel shipping containers to replace aging shipping containers. This work will provide the rare opportunity to start with a blank sheet of paper to provide the best solution to ensuring the Program's spent fuel can be shipped efficiently and safely while being able to withstand the rigors of hypothetical accident scenarios should they occur.

Job duties will consist of either or both design and analysis work such as:

Researching new ways to ship spent fuel, developing and implementing new concepts to maintain package performance during accident conditions, designing shipping container parts and support equipment (e.g., loading/unloading equipment), analyzing performance via hand calculations or finite element analysis (FEA), and conducting material and fundamentals testing to verify analyses.

Perform engineering evaluations and analyses, make engineering decisions for all aspects of assigned tasks with input from project leads, apply critical thought processes to identify and assess problems, develop SIM solutions to achieve the best hardware designs, clearly and concisely document the work, and prepare technical proposals that discuss and justify the recommendations.

Cognizant areas may include planning, modeling, analyzing, designing, and testing of structural systems.

Travel for this position is minimal.

Required Combination of Knowledge and Skill

BS degree in engineering or Bachelor's degree in a science related field from an accredited college or university required.

Preferred Skills

Hardware design or structural analysis experience.
