Job Description The Nuclear Power Training Unit (NPTU) Charleston Quality Assurance Engineers play a key role in ensuring the Sailors and civilians who maintain the Moored Training Ships and their support systems have the right training, engineering support, and supervision to perform first-time quality maintenance. NPTU Charleston maintains the Moored Training Ships and their support systems to Navy Nuclear Propulsion Program (NNPP) standards so that NPTU Charleston can fulfil the vital role of providing nuclear-trained Sailors to the fleet. This is an excellent position for those who desire experience with technical requirements and oversight of maintenance as well as facilitating self-assessment and continuous improvement. Major emphasis areas for the Quality Assurance Engineers include: Providing technical oversight for site organizations to affect first time quality maintenance. Conducting thorough documented surveillances of maintenance work in progress and audits of the supporting records accomplishment. Mentoring site organizations in conducting critical self-assessment to promote performance improvement. All positions at NPTU Charleston include involvement in our Emergency Response Organization, a group of dedicated professionals committed to ensuring a satisfactory level of site emergency preparedness. *This position requires the successful completion of a 5-week Quality Assurance Officer course (QAOC) in Norfolk, VA or previous QAOC qualifications. Required Combination of Knowledge and Skill BS degree in engineering or Bachelor's degree in a science related field from an accredited college or university and a minimum of six years of relevant experience or; MS degree in engineering or Master's degree in a science related field from an accredited college or university and a minimum of four years of relevant experience or; Currently or previously Shift Supervisor Part I qualified or EDO and two years as EOOW in the Nuclear Operations Program or; Three years as SRE plus Watch Instructor and Refueling Facility Area Refueling Engineer and Fuel and Barrier Shift Supervisor (ECF only) or SRE qualified and six years of experience. Preferred Skills Four years of prior Navy Nuclear Plant operations, maintenance, or assessment experience to include some Navy Nuclear Quality Assurance experience. Strong communications, customer service, attention to detail, willingness to learn, and familiarization with numerous technical maintenance requirements. Ability to articulate technical ideas/concepts in a clear and concise manner. Strong interpersonal and communication skills, including the ability to effectively team with individual contributors, managers, and external organizations. Innovative and creative, ability to think beyond the current systems and requirements. Prior Moored Training Ship or Naval Nuclear Power Program experience. Proficiency in typical Microsoft software such as Word and Excel. Familiarization with project management principles.
