The Naval Nuclear Laboratory comprises the U.S. Department of Energy locations and personnel responsible for developing advanced naval nuclear propulsion technology, providing technical support to ensure the safety and reliability of our nation's naval nuclear reactors, and training the Sailors who operate those reactors in the U.S. Navy's submarines and aircraft carrier Fleets. The Naval Nuclear Laboratory includes the Bettis and Knolls Atomic Power Laboratories, the Kenneth A. Kesselring Site, and the Naval Reactors Facility which have proudly supported the nation since 1946. The Naval Nuclear Laboratory has nearly 8,000 employees working at primary locations in Pennsylvania, New York, South Carolina, and Idaho. Job Description

Naval Nuclear Laboratory (NNL) Internal Audit (IA) is seeking an auditor to join the team! This team provides independent internal assurance services for NNL's operations. IA fulfills its auditing responsibilities by combining a process orientation with compliance requirements.

IA performs audits in sixteen broad contractor areas of responsibility established by the DOE Office of Inspector General. These include financial management, procurement, human resources, construction and facilities, data processing and information systems, and others.

This Internal Auditor Position will conduct a wide variety of audit assignments to assess the effectiveness of controls, accuracy of financial records, efficiency of operations, and perform audits of large-scale project performance and controls.

Position responsibilities are:




  • Conducting internal audits in accordance with the Generally Accepted Government Auditing Standards (GAGAS).



  • Identifying opportunities to improve internal control, system efficiencies, or overall effectiveness.




Fulfilling these responsibilities requires working in an independent, cooperative, and timely manner to plan, assess risks, determine areas for emphasis, select appropriate technical methods including data analytics, develop specialized audit aids, and complete assigned requirements. The successful candidate will have the ability to establish and maintain productive working relationships with other NNL personnel, including those who may be capable of supporting audit work as subject matter experts.

Required Combination of Knowledge and Skill
Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university and a minimum of six years of relevant experience or;
Master's degree in a related field from an accredited college or university and a minimum of four years of relevant experience.
Preferred Skills


  • Demonstrated effective written and spoken communication skills.



  • Demonstrated strong analytical and project management skills.



  • Professional certification (CPA, CIA, CFE) preferred.



  • Strong understanding of audit methodology, procedures, and techniques, GAAP, COSO.



  • Project auditing experience preferred.



  • Working knowledge of common office applications (i.e. Microsoft Office and Excel).



  • Working knowledge of audit software, TeamMate preferred.
