Job Description

Are you looking for a position directly supporting aircraft carriers that is a broadening opportunity through hands-on experience and daily interactions with shipyard and Navy personnel The Reactor Plant Contractors' Office (RPCO) Program is seeking a Field Engineer at Newport News Shipbuilding (NNS) supporting NIMITZ Class Reactor Servicing and FORD Class Power Unit Assembly. RPCO engineers operate in a fast paced, dynamic environment and independently exercise authority to ensure that work is conducted in a safe manner. RPCO field engineers are on-site representatives of the Naval Reactors Program laboratories and component supply organizations. The selected candidate will provide engineering support and independent oversight of work associated with reactor servicing, equipment modification and problem resolution. RPCO engineers provide a deckplate presence during performance of nuclear work and operations and are expected to utilize their technical breadth and depth to influence and provide feedback to on-site management and partner organizations. This position involves direct interaction with Navy personnel, shipyard engineering, site organizations, local government representatives, and partner organizations at NNL and BPMI. Successful completion of a job-specific qualification (NIMITZ Class Joint Refueling Group or FORD Class Joint Fueling Group) is required for this position. Training associated with this qualification is expected to take approximately 6 months, depending on previous experience, and will be conducted at the Bettis Laboratory Site. At the conclusion of the qualification, the prospective RPCO Field Engineer will be expected to demonstrate an adequate understanding of reactor servicing principles and the ability to function in an engineering and oversight capacity at a remote location.

This position is an exciting opportunity to be part of aircraft carrier reactor servicing or new construction. Opportunities to travel to other field locations may exist to support peak work periods. This is a 3 to 5 year assignment in a field office upon completion of qualification.

Required Combination of Knowledge and Skill

BS degree in engineering or Bachelor's degree in a science related field from an accredited college or university and a minimum of four years of relevant experience or; MS degree in engineering or Master's degree in a science related field from an accredited college or university and a minimum of two years of relevant experience or; Currently or previously NPE qualified or CTE/ACRS and one year of EOOW in the Nuclear Operations Program or Watch Instructor and Refueling Facility Area Refueling Engineer and one year as SRE

* Must be willing to relocate to shipyard and back to Laboratory after completion of 3-5 year assignment.

* Must have ability to complete job specific Joint Refueling Group qualification.

* Must be willing to work back shift hours as needed to support reactor servicing operations.

* This position requires the ability to climb and descend ladders and transit elevated locations. Exposure to industrial noise should be expected.

  • Previous experience working in NNPP Reactor Servicing
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Previous experience in applying innovative solutions to resolve problems/improve performance
