About Us

The Naval Nuclear Laboratory comprises the U.S. Department of Energy locations and personnel responsible for developing advanced naval nuclear propulsion technology, providing technical support to ensure the safety and reliability of our nation's naval nuclear reactors, and training the Sailors who operate those reactors in the U.S. Navy's submarines and aircraft carrier Fleets. The Naval Nuclear Laboratory includes the Bettis and Knolls Atomic Power Laboratories, the Kenneth A. Kesselring Site, and the Naval Reactors Facility which have proudly supported the nation since 1946. Job Description

Are you an experienced software engineer Do you like a mix of software coding and hands-on work in a research and development laboratory where you can test your designs real-time Are you seeking to join a company with excellent benefits, work/life balance, and job stability Naval Nuclear Laboratory (NNL) is seeking an experienced software engineer to lead teams in design of custom software applications for electromechanical examination systems. Our teams are made up of mechanical, electrical, and software engineers who develop innovative electromechanical systems to perform remote exam operations in uniquely challenging environments.

NNL seeks an engineer experienced in leading teams in architecting, designing, and deploying the custom software solution aspects of a control system. Our control systems typically focus on X, Y, Z axis motion control, data acquisition and processing, and database design. The team places high value on developing systems that optimize lifecycle management. Team members perform a mix of hands-on work in the laboratory environment where systems are designed and tested as well as office-based work to develop design documentation and author software code. Very minimal travel is required, typically for training and technical conferences or to support startup of a new system, which provides excellent job satisfaction in seeing developed designs deployed to end-users.

Required Combination of Knowledge and Skill

  • BS degree in engineering or Bachelor's degree in a science related field from an accredited college or university and a minimum of six years of relevant experience or;
  • MS degree in engineering or Master's degree in a science related field from an accredited college or university and a minimum of four years of relevant experience or;

Preferred Skills

  • Experience in both solo task execution as well as leading teams in the following:
  • Architecting software solutions in object-oriented programming environments (C#, Visual Basic, .NET, LabVIEW)
  • Database design
  • Designing motion control, metrology, coordinate measurement, or image processing software applications
