About the Job

Background:
This position is a part of the University Services Finance organization. University Services Finance oversees all financial activities within University Services, a division of the University of Minnesota responsible for campus operations, including Facilities Management, Capital Project Management, Planning, Space and Real Estate, and Auxiliary Services as well as University Health and Safety, Public Safety and the Office of Human Resources. The department is responsible for rate development, capital budgeting, accounts payable/receivable, budgeting, payroll, financial analysis and reporting, legislative reporting, utility accounting (including purchasing strategy, billing, and rate development), project accounting, debt compliance and general problem solving.

The position supports Housing & Residential Life (HRL), Contract Administration (CA), Dining Services and the UCard Office (U Card) within Auxiliary Services, which are primarily self-supporting units with an estimated combined budget of $95M. This position is responsible for oversight of financial operations including supervising finance staff, reporting and analyzing monthly financial results; analyzing account balances and expense projections; interpreting internal and external business issues and recommending solutions and best practices, solving complex problems; and taking a broad perspective to identify solutions.

University Services Finance endorses a "work with flexibility" approach. Work location options for this position include working partially remote or entirely in the office and are based on the work of the position.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Fiscal Operations, Oversight, Accounting & Reporting- 50%
* Manage and lead a variety of high level accounting functions including accounts payable, accounts receivable, general ledger, cash controls, purchasing activities and monthly and annual financial reporting functions
* Monitor and analyze non-sponsored revenue, expense and balance sheet accounts; and balance and fund usage for compliance with financial reporting
* Develop financial reports for managers and directors with recommendations regarding account and/or fund balances, budgeting practices and accounting functions
* Review, interpret and apply contractual, university and departmental policies and procedures to daily financial operations and identify areas of concern
* Manage the reconciliation of the subsidiary general ledger system with EFS
* Ensure the integrity of the chart of accounts for both EFS and subsidiary accounting systems is maintained. Research the source or cause of discrepancies
* Develop fiscal procedures to ensure that finance/business related work is completed efficiently and effectively, and that internal controls are maintained
* Manage the financial transactions of CA external partnership agreements and assist the system campus contract staff in understanding financial processes and reports.
* Facilitate training for non-finance staff

Budget Development and Financial Analysis - 15%
* Prepare detailed financial analysis utilizing historical data and recommend a course of action to the finance manager
* Develop financial projections based on trends and business knowledge of operation
* Ensure budget entry into the general ledger and subsidiary ledger
* Develop and maintain financial schedules to support critical analysis and decision making

Supervision - 25%
* Hire, train, supervise, and provide performance feedback to professional finance staff
* Plan, implement, prioritize, assign and direct accounting work for direct reports
* Coordinate training and professional development for direct reports to ensure that staff has the necessary skills to meet/exceed performance expectations.
* Develop and maintains a respectful workplace environment that values and promotes diversity, employee engagement and customer service
* Manage a productive work environment that maximizes the talents of each staff member

Other essential functions - 10%
* Attend department meetings and participate on assigned project teams.
* Attend professional development courses and workshops.
* Demonstrate ethical behavior in conducting all responsibilities in this position.
* Represent the interests of the departments in meetings and on committees.
* Provide support to other University Services departments
* Act a key advisor to management on financial matters.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:
* BA/BS in accounting/finance or related field plus at least six years of experience
* Strong experience with integrated general ledger database system and operating statements
* Analytical skills including financial projection, assisting with budgeting, and statement preparation

Preferred Qualifications:
* Strong Excel spreadsheet preparation skills
* Demonstrate excellent attention to detail in both written and verbal communication.
* Supervisory experience
* Experience with University of Minnesota's accounting and business policies, procedures and software systems
