About the Job

The Department of Veterinary Population Medicine (VPM) at the University of Minnesota College of Veterinary Medicine in St. Paul invites applications for a contract (non-tenure) full-time (100% appointment) faculty position in Large Animal Surgery. The appointment will be at the rank of Assistant Professor, Associate Professor or Professor at the University of Minnesota. The final rank and terms of appointment will depend on the qualifications and experience of the selected candidate consistent with Collegiate and University policies.

Key responsibilities:

  • Provide exceptional clinical service in Large Animal Surgery (LAS) at the Veterinary Medical Center, which includes the Piper Equine Hospital and Large Animal Hospital. Provide elective daytime services for large animal surgical and equine sports medicine/lameness cases, as well as emergent services and consultations to local veterinarians.

  • Participate in evening/weekend/holiday on call coverage which is shared among 4 faculty.

  • Provide clinical teaching and mentoring of veterinary students, interns and residents, and participate in resident training activities such as seminars, board exam preparation, and journal club.

  • Provide didactic instruction of professional students to support the DVM curriculum

  • Develop close relationships with clients and referring veterinarians to provide comprehensive care and oversight for equine and food and fiber patients.

  • Participate in scholarly activities and demonstrate a collegial, collaborative approach and willingness to participate in departmental initiatives, programs and committees.

The clinical service is shared among 4 faculty. The caseload is approximately 90% equine with the remainder comprising llamas/alpacas, pet goats and pigs, with occasional sheep and cattle. The anticipated workload distribution is expected to be predominantly clinical service (includes daytime and after hours on call), teaching veterinary students in years 1-4 and training LAS interns and residents. Experienced surgeons are encouraged to apply. While scholarly activities are encouraged and expected, development of an independent research program is not an expectation of this position, nor is it required for academic advancement.

The University of Minnesota seeks candidates who are interested in programs that support community and belonging and excellence of the academic community through their service, teaching, research, and outreach. The candidate will demonstrate commitment to delivering exceptional clinical service, teaching, student mentorship, and contribute to the national prominence of the Veterinary Medical Center, the VPM Department, and the University of Minnesota.

About the Large Animal Surgery Service

The LAS service includes an enthusiastic, cohesive, patient-care oriented LAS team composed of four ACVS board-certified surgeons (one tenured, and three clinical), 3 house officers (2 surgery residents and 1 surgery intern), and 3 dedicated surgery technicians (along with additional 24/7 technical support). The clinical activities take place in the 50,000 square foot Leatherdale Equine Center (opened in 2007) which includes the Piper Equine Hospital, the Barenscheer Arena and the Nutrena Conference Center, and also at the Large Animal Hospital. The Piper Equine Hospital contains state-of-the-art surgical, and advanced imaging equipment, experienced support staff, and collegial colleagues. The hospital is well-equipped with a spacious OR that includes advanced surgical equipment (arthroscopic and laparoscopic towers, staplers and electrocautery devices for GI surgery, and AO compatible orthopedic equipment including locking plates) and a C-arm unit. Additional diagnostic equipment include: VetRocket DR imaging, Samsung V7 and HM70 EVO digital ultrasounds, Standing Equine MRI (Hallmarq), Standing Equine CT (Asto CT), video endoscopy (1.5 m, 3.5 m), a dynamic endoscope, Equinosis Q with Lameness Locator, and a force plate. Treatment modalities include a shockwave unit (PulseVet - 4 trodes), diode and CO2 laser, PRP, IRAP, Pro-Stride APS, and Alpha2EQ equipment. Teaching space is available in the Nutrena Conference room, and teaching horses are available and housed in the 14 stall Dudley barn and paddocks located behind the equine center. The Large Animal Hospital is located a few blocks away from the Equine Center and contains the facilities for food and fiber patients, nuclear scintigraphy, and isolation. The Large Animal Surgery Service works closely with four large animal internal medicine specialists and six anesthesiologists to provide comprehensive patient care. Additional specialty support is available through ophthalmology, cardiology, dermatology, and small animal surgery.
