What Your Job Will Be Like

We are seeking a highly motivated R&D S&E Systems Engineer to join the Stockpile Tech Basis team, a growing organization that plays a vital role in supporting Sandia National Laboratories and the United States Nuclear Security Enterprise.

In this role, you will contribute to a critical national security mission by leading systems engineering efforts for the D5LE2 Submarine-Launched Ballistic Missile compatibility study for the W76-1. This work requires a strong multidisciplinary systems engineering approach, grounded in rigorous science, technical analysis, and collaboration across organizations. You will also work closely with key partners and customers, including the U.S. Navy and the National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA), to support successful integration of Department of Energy (DOE) weapon systems into the nations nuclear deterrent.

On any given day, you may:

  • Lead interdisciplinary teams in solving high-visibility, complex technical challenges
  • Initiate, coordinate, and lead detailed technical studies to deepen understanding of system performance and related hardware
  • Apply systems engineering principles and trade studies to evaluate alternatives and identify effective system solutions
  • Collaborate with partners across the Nuclear Security Enterprise, including NNSA, the Department of Defense, Los Alamos National Laboratory, the U.S. Navy, the Kansas City National Security Campus (KCNSC), and Pantex on design, testing strategies, requirements, and test planning

Due to the nature of the work, the selected applicant must be able to work onsite full-time in Albuquerque, New Mexico.

This position also requires travel to locations including, but not limited to, Livermore, CA; Los Alamos, NM; Amarillo, TX; Washington, DC; and Kansas City, MO.

Salary Range

$117,500 - $235,700

*Salary range is estimated, and actual salary will be determined after consideration of the selected candidate's experience and qualifications, and application of any approved geographic salary differential.

Qualifications We Require

  • A bachelor's degree in a relevant discipline and five (5) years of directly relevant experience, or an equivalent combination of directly relevant education and engineering or scientific experience that demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform independent research and development.
  • Active DOE Q clearance or equivalent to start with the ability to participate in random polygraph testing as requested.
Qualifications We Desire

The ideal R&D Systems Engineer candidate for Sandia National Laboratories will in addition possess the following:

  • Graduate degree in Engineering or a highly related field where an independent research project was a graduation requirement (e.g., independent project, thesis, or dissertation).
  • Experience working with Nuclear Security Enterprise (NSE) laboratories and plants including Pantex, Kansas City National Security Campus (KCNSC), Lawrence Livermore Laboratory (LLNL) and Kansas City National Security Campus/New Mexico Operations (KCNSC/NMO).
  • Experience working on engineering design, qualification, production, or related modeling/simulation projects.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, ability to work effectively in multidisciplinary teams.

Also, for this posting we are seeking individuals with the following experience:

  • Demonstrated leadership skills and the ability to guide teams in addressing complex technical challenges.
  • Commitment to fostering an inclusive, collaborative environment that values cultural and technical diversity.
  • Proven ability to integrate effectively and work collaboratively across multiple technical teams and disciplines.
  • Self-motivated, adaptable, and positive approach, with the ability to thrive in a dynamic, fast-paced environment.
  • Familiarity with product development and qualification, testing and evaluation, and modeling and simulation.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to develop and deliver effective briefings to customers and management at multiple levels.
  • Knowledge of and familiarity with nuclear weapon systems.
  • Demonstrated commitment to continuous learning, professional growth, and process improvement.
About Our Team

The Stockpile Tech Basis organization delivers agile solutions to the nuclear deterrent through our system engineering expertise and our hardware lifetime management team. Through our system engineering, we can shape a program to address near term needs for the nation and lead that program from development to qualification, through operational capability.

We team with diverse organizations throughout the labs to deliver the needed capability. Our hardware lifetime management team provides full lifetime support for hardware needs for system level development and qualification activities from early identification of needs, provisioning, kitting, assembly of test assets, and final disposition of the hardware. This full lifetime management enables the engineers to execute high fidelity experiments to validate designs.

Posting Duration

This posting will be open for application submissions for a minimum of three (3) calendar days, including the 'posting date'. Sandia reserves the right to extend the posting date at any time.

Security Clearance

Position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) L security clearance to start, or equivalent active security clearance with another U.S. government agency (e.g., DOD).

Sandia is required by DOE to conduct a pre-employment drug test and background review that includes checks of personal references, credit, law enforcement records, and employment/education verifications. Applicants for employment need to be able to maintain a DOE L-level security clearance, which requires U.S. citizenship. If you hold more than one citizenship (i.e., of the U.S. and another country), your ability to obtain a security clearance may be impacted.

Applicants offered employment with Sandia are subject to a federal background investigation to meet the requirements for access to classified information or matter if the duties of the position require a DOE security clearance. Substance abuse or illegal drug use, falsification of information, criminal activity, serious misconduct or other indicators of untrustworthiness can cause a clearance to be denied or terminated by DOE, resulting in the inability to perform the duties assigned and subsequent termination of employment.

EEO

All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, age, disability, or veteran status and any other protected class under state or federal law.

NNSA Requirements for MedPEDs

If you have a Medical Portable Electronic Device (MedPED), such as a pacemaker, defibrillator, drug-releasing pump, hearing aids, or diagnostic equipment and other equipment for measuring, monitoring, and recording body functions such as heartbeat and brain waves, if employed by Sandia National Laboratories you may be required to comply with NNSA security requirements for MedPEDs.

If you have a MedPED and you are selected for an on-site interview at Sandia National Laboratories, there may be additional steps necessary to ensure compliance with NNSA security requirements prior to the interview date.
