Position description

The University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) invites applications and nominations for a nationally and internationally recognized academic Otolaryngologist - Head & Neck Surgeon to join the faculty of the David Geffen School of Medicine (DGSOM) as the Chair of the Department of Head and Neck Surgery. As a preeminent clinician, scholar, and leader, the successful candidate will also be considered for the Thomas C. Calcaterra Endowed Chair.

Reporting to the Vice Chancellor for Health Sciences, the Dean of the DGSOM, and the President and CEO of the UCLA Health System, the Chair works collaboratively with clinical, academic, and administrative leaders to establish and execute the strategic vision of the Department of Head and Neck Surgery within the greater health system. The Chair is responsible for advancing the Department's mission of excellence in clinical care, education, research, and community engagement through the development of educational programs, research and innovation, oversight of clinical operations, financial management, staffing, performance improvement, faculty recruitment, and strengthening community partnerships. In addition, the Chair cultivates a collegial, inclusive, and multidisciplinary culture consistent with the principles of the DGSOM's Cultural North Star, providing mentorship to faculty members, while also upholding UCLA Health's patient-experience model, CICARE, and promoting clinical quality, safety, and operational distinction.

The Department of Head and Neck Surgery at UCLA is at the forefront of research, education, and patient care. The department has an established track record of excellence as noted by consistent national and international accolades including a recent U.S. News & World Report #1 ranking in Ear, Nose, & Throat Specialty care. World renowned clinical and research faculty represent all 7 subspecialties within Otolaryngology - Head and Neck Surgery and a dedication to comprehensive Otolaryngologic care. Multidisciplinary focused patient care is the ethos of the department as noted by the Head and Neck Cancer Program (HNCP), the Voice Center for Medicine & the Arts, the Cochlear Implant Center, the Facial Nerve Program, Microvascular Reconstructive Surgery Program, Comprehensive Sleep Surgery Program, Pediatric Airway Program, and Skull Base Surgery programs as just a few examples. The Department also has one of the largest nationally recognized residency programs, including fellowships in Neurotology (UCLA House Ear Program), Laryngology, Facial Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery, Rhinology, and Sleep Surgery.

Being located on the main campus of the #1 ranked public University at UCLA has provided the department with extensive collaborative research efforts across multiple disciplines including the schools of Engineering, Humanities, Business Management, Dentistry, Neurosciences, and Life Sciences. A consistent track record of successful NIH and extramural research funding has led to pioneering innovation and discovery. Moreover, the ability to foster future leaders in research has been possible with the department being awarded the first R25 NIH training program, dedicated to future surgeon scientists.

The department seeks a Chair with an outstanding academic and clinical background and reputation, who will be able to provide strategic leadership and continue to advance the mission, operations, and service of the Department within the School of Medicine, as well as within the greater Los Angeles community and Southern California region. The ideal candidate will be a distinguished Otolaryngologist - Head & Neck Surgeon and recognized academic leader with an outstanding record of accomplishments in clinical care, research, education and service. In addition, the successful candidate will exhibit a highly collaborative style and vision for integration and cross-collaborative initiatives within the DGSOM, UCLA campus and beyond, superb communication skills and emotional intelligence, dedication to mentorship, a passion for developing clinician scientists, a critical devotion to development, and a deep commitment to fostering an inclusive and equitable environment. The University of California is committed to creating and maintaining a community dedicated to the advancement, application, and transmission of knowledge and creative endeavors through academic excellence, where all individuals who participate in University programs and activities can work and learn together in a safe and secure environment, free of violence, harassment, bullying and other demeaning behavior, discrimination, exploitation, or intimidation. With this commitment as well as a commitment to addressing all forms of academic misconduct, UCLA conducts targeted employment reference checks for finalists to whom departments or other hiring units would like to extend formal offers of appointment into Academic Senate faculty positions. The targeted employment reference checks involve contacting the finalists' current and prior places of employment to ask whether there have been substantiated findings of misconduct that would violate the University's Faculty Code of Conduct. To implement this process, UCLA requires all applicants for Academic Senate faculty positions to complete, sign, and upload the form entitled "Authorization to Release Information" into RECRUIT as part of their application. If the applicant does not include the signed authorization to release information with the application materials, the application will be considered incomplete. As with any incomplete application, the application will not receive further consideration. Although all applicants for faculty recruitments must complete the entire application, only finalists (i.e., those to whom the department or other hiring unit would like to extend a formal offer) considered for Academic Senate faculty positions will be subject to targeted employment reference checks.

As a University employee, you will be required to comply with all applicable University policies and/or collective bargaining agreements, as may be amended from time to time. Federal, state, or local government directives may impose additional requirements.
