Senior Ruby on Rails Engineer (Senior Consultant, Engineering & Technical Services) We are seeking a senior engineer who will be responsible for designing, developing, enhancing, and maintaining full stackfunctionality within a Ruby on Rails application. The role requires strong Rails expertise,sound software engineering practices, and the ability to work within an existing productionsystem while introducing new capabilities safely. The engineer works closely with product, design, and engineering teammates to translatebusiness and user needs into scalable technical solutions. The position also places significantemphasis on accessibility, automated testing, secure development, code quality, andproactive communication of technical risks and dependencies. At Fearless, this Senior Consultant collaborates with cross functional teams to align the technical vision, implementation, and quality of software systems across development, reliability, testing, and operations.This role will possess the skills to be able to bridge business objectives with technical execution in software development, infrastructure, security, and testing at an advanced application level of proficiency. The Sr. Consultant role will work on projects that allow them to ensure scalable, secure, and reliable solutions while mentoring engineers, fostering collaboration, and aligning stakeholders with product and project goals. Fearless Your Responsibilities in this Role: *Design, build, and maintain full-stack features in Ruby on Rails, including complexmulti-page, multi-track form flows, data integrations, and user-facing dashboards. *Write clean, well-tested, and maintainable code with a strong emphasis onobject-oriented design, domain modeling, and service-layer architecture. *Develop and maintain RESTful APIs and background job processing pipelines usingtools such as GoodJob. *Build accessible, standards-compliant frontend experiences using modern JavaScript(ES6+), vanilla JavaScript, Stimulus controllers, ERB templates, the U.S. Web DesignSystem, HTML5, and CSS3 - including performing accessibility audits, remediatingaccessibility issues, and adhering to WCAG 2.1+ accessibility standards. *Participate in thorough, thoughtful pull request reviews, contributing to a culture oftechnical excellence and shared code ownership. *Collaborate with product and design teams to translate requirements into scalabletechnical solutions, proactively identifying tradeoffs and surfacing risks. *Support a widely-used Rails application through careful refactoring, dependencymanagement, safe database migrations, and thorough RSpec coverage, withoutdisrupting production systems. *Contribute to a secure, compliant development environment in accordance withfederal and state contractor requirements, including Public Trust security standards. Work Experience Project Skill and Experience Requirements: *5+ years of hands-on experience maintaining, enhancing, and modernizing existingRuby on Rails applications, with a demonstrated track record of building conventional,maintainable, extensible, and well tested full stack solutions while minimizingdisruption to production systems. *Strong proficiency in object-oriented programming principles and patterns, with theability to contribute to and lead substantive code reviews. *Experience with complex data modeling, multi-step form flows, data validation, andintegrations with third-party or government data systems. *Proficiency with vanilla JavaScript (ES6+) and modern frontend development usingVue.js (or similar frameworks such as Svelte or Ember). *Familiarity with web accessibility best practices (WCAG 2.1+), ARIA patterns, screenreader compatibility, accessibility testing, and remediation of accessibility issues. *Experience designing and consuming RESTful APIs and working with background jobframeworks such as GoodJob. *Experience with role-based access control and policy-based authorization, such asPundit. *Strong proficiency with Git and GitHub, including working with private repositories,branching workflows, pull requests, code reviews, and collaborative source control practices. *Strong collaboration and communication skills, with demonstrated experienceworking effectively across engineering, product, design, and other cross-functionalteams, including communicating risks, dependencies, and blockers early. *Demonstrated ability to take initiative, work independently, proactively identify andtroubleshoot problems, and drive work forward without requiring detailed day-to-daydirection. *Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field, or equivalentpractical experience. Preferred Experience *Prior experience working in federal or state government technology contractingenvironments. *Experience integrating a Rails application with Salesforce, or with a comparableexternal system of record. *Familiarity with compliance frameworks such as FedRAMP, NIST/FISMA, or HIPAA. *Experience shipping software in more than one language, and with translationmanagement tooling such as Lokalise. *Experience with authentication systems such as Login.gov, OmniAuth, and SSOintegrations.
