Position Overview
| Primary Purpose of Position |
The Assistant Director of Residential Apartment Life and Student Conduct provides comprehensive leadership for Apartment Life, encompassing approximately 3,000 apartment-style beds, and serves as the principal liaison between Housing and Residence Life and the Dean of Students area for residential student behavior and conduct matters. The Assistant Director is a full-time, live-in, twelve-month professional and a key educator within the Division of Student Affairs. The position advances student learning, belonging, wellbeing, safety, and accountability through staff leadership, responsive operations, and educational student conduct practices.
The Assistant Director serves as the department's lead coordinator for residential conduct workflow. The position receives or reviews housing-related referrals, assigns cases to fellow Assistant Directors and designated hall staff, monitors progress and consistency, manages escalations, and adjudicates complex or sensitive cases as assigned.

| Primary Function of Organizational Unit |
The primary purpose of the Housing and Residence Life department is to provide housing accommodations and a certain quality of life for over 6,500 students. To provide living accommodations which are clean, safe, healthy, and comfortable while enhancing a certain quality of life, which supports the academic mission of North Carolina A&T State University. The Residence Life program is designed to provide an environment which supports students in their academic pursuits, encourages interpersonal development, and offers opportunities for individual growth and challenge. To provide a quality of life for on campus students through a clean, safe, educational environment. Responsible for the overall leadership and management of all residence halls, the assignments of rooms, occupancy status of halls, housekeeping needs, maintenance concerns, and budgets, including operating and programming. |
| Minimum Requirements |
Required Experience & Qualifications
- Master's degree completed or in progress in higher education administration, college student personnel, counseling, or a related field. An equivalent combination of education and relevant leadership experience may be considered.
- Three to four years of progressively responsible experience in student conduct, housing and residence life, student affairs, or a closely related setting.
- Demonstrated experience supervising, coaching, or leading professional, graduate, or paraprofessional staff.
- Demonstrated experience responding to student concerns, behavioral incidents, emergencies, or crisis situations.
- Experience hearing or adjudicating student conduct or community standards cases.
- Progressively responsible experience adjudicating student conduct cases and coordinating complex student-behavior or care matters.
- Experience managing case workflow, delegating assignments, and monitoring case completion and quality.
Essential Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Knowledge of student development theory, residential education, and inclusive community practices.
- Strong supervisory, coaching, performance-management, and team-development skills.
- Ability to interpret policy, exercise sound judgment, and manage competing priorities in a complex residential environment.
- Demonstrated skill in student conduct adjudication, conflict resolution, crisis response, and educational accountability.
- Effective written, verbal, interpersonal, and cross-functional communication skills.
- Ability to analyze operational and student-behavior data, identify trends, and recommend improvements.
- Commitment to accurate documentation, confidentiality, fairness, consistency, and timely follow-through.
- Ability to participate in an on-call structure and support a 24/7 residential operation.
- Advanced knowledge of student conduct administration, due process, case assignment, conflict resolution, and educational sanctioning.
- Ability to coordinate confidential, cross-functional casework and provide clear procedural guidance to trained hearing officers.
- Knowledge of apartment-style residential operations and large, decentralized residential communities.

- Four or more years of full-time experience in Housing and Residence Life or a comparable residential program.
- Experience with on-call response and live-on university housing responsibilities.
- Experience with conduct or case-management software, such as Maxient or Advocate.
- Experience supporting students from varied backgrounds and needs.
- Experience using assessment findings and operational data to improve programs and services.
- Experience serving as a liaison between housing and a Dean of Students or central student conduct office.
- Experience overseeing apartment-style housing or a large residential portfolio.
- Experience developing conduct training, protocols, reports, and educational sanctions.
