Job Title: Staff Research Associate II

Location(s): San Francisco, CA

Job Summary
The Staff Research Associate II (SRA II), under the supervision of the responsible veterinarian, provides basic veterinary assessment and care of rodents and other species to support animal health, welfare, and research programs. The position performs daily para-veterinary health care procedures and research services in a laboratory animal setting and requires a high degree of confidentiality.

Bachelor's degree is required. Previous animal experience is not required. Candidates with a PhD or Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) will not be considered.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct animal health surveillance for rodents and other species as assigned.
  • Communicate laboratory and animal health information to researchers.
  • Support website functions.
  • Participate in rodent sentinel health and similar programs.
  • Draft standard operating procedures (SOPs).
  • Provide training to laboratory staff.
  • Perform necropsy techniques and other diagnostic or clinical diagnostic procedures.
  • Perform administrative tasks as needed.
  • Support animal health and rodent health programs and veterinarians.
  • Support research projects and related activities.
  • Review laboratory reports, summarize findings, and communicate results to veterinarians, researchers, and others.
  • Review data, research protocols, and other written documents and provide guidance or training as appropriate.
  • Assist with compliance-related activities.
  • Develop and maintain working knowledge of applicable regulations and animal welfare requirements.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Excellent organizational, computer, and technical skills.
  • Experience or demonstrated proficiency with database management, file maintenance, spreadsheets, and word processing.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
  • Ability to communicate rodent health issues, diagnostic procedures, diseases, and standard treatments.
  • Ability to independently analyze laboratory reports and summarize findings.
  • Valid California Driver's License.
  • Participation in the California DMV Pull Notice System.
  • Ability to maintain a high degree of confidentiality.
  • Ability to quickly obtain a working knowledge of applicable regulations and animal welfare requirements.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to lift up to 30 pounds.
  • Ability to stand, walk, bend, squat, kneel, stoop, and reach above shoulder level.
  • Ability to work on hard surfaces for up to 7 hours per day.
  • Ability to work with animals of various sizes for periods of up to 4-5 hours.
  • Ability to push and pull heavy objects and safely move or lift heavy loads.
  • Ability to perform tasks requiring personal protective equipment, including safety glasses, safety shoes, protective clothing, gloves, fume hoods, and glove boxes.

Medical Requirements

  • Full medical evaluation is required for onsite candidates.
  • Mandatory participation in the department's occupational health monitoring program.
  • Pre-employment medical evaluation is required.

Schedule:

  • Monday-Friday, 7:00 AM-4:00 PM
