Salary: $17.00- $20.00/hr

Position Summary:

The Community School Tutor provides academic and enrichment support to elementary school students participating in Community School and after-school programming. The Tutor works closely with students, teachers, Community School staff, and families to create a supportive learning environment that helps students strengthen academic skills, build confidence, develop positive relationships, and engage meaningfully in school.

To help children in poverty to succeed and thrive. We do this by providing comprehensive support to children and their families in targeted high-needs New York City neighborhoods. Children's Aid annually serves children and their families at over 40 sites in New York, as well as through three national program models. Children's Aid is concentrating its efforts on creating cradle-through-college pathways in high-need neighborhoods, with a focus on children's health, family stability, education, and social and emotional development.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Student Engagement & Social-Emotional Support
* Build positive, supportive relationships with students and serve as a positive role model.
* Encourage students to develop confidence, perseverance, responsibility, and a positive attitude toward learning.
* Incorporate age-appropriate social-emotional learning activities when appropriate.
* Support students in developing positive peer relationships and problem-solving skills.
* Help create a safe, welcoming, and inclusive environment for all students.

Classroom & Group Management
* Maintain a structured and engaging tutoring environment.
* Establish and reinforce clear expectations, routines, and positive behavior supports.
* Use positive behavior-management strategies and redirect students appropriately.
* Follow all school, Community School, Children's Aid, and program safety procedures.
* Maintain appropriate professional boundaries with students.

Collaboration
* Collaborate with the Community School Director, teachers, school leadership, social workers, and other program staff to support student success.
* Participate in staff meetings, professional development, trainings, and program activities as required.
* Share relevant observations regarding student academic progress, engagement, attendance, and behavior with program leadership.
* Work collaboratively with other tutors and program staff to plan engaging activities and learning experiences

Family & Community Engagement
* Support Community School family engagement activities and events when needed.
* Communicate respectfully and professionally with parents and caregivers.
* Help connect families to available school and community resources when directed by Community School leadership.
* Promote a welcoming environment where students and families feel valued and supported.

Minimum Qualifications:

* High school diploma or equivalent required; college coursework or a degree in education, child development, social work, psychology, or a related field preferred.
* Previous experience working with elementary-age children in a school, after-school, tutoring, youth development, or community-based setting preferred.
* Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
* Ability to work effectively with students from diverse cultural, linguistic, and socioeconomic backgrounds.
* Ability to work independently while also functioning effectively as part of a team.
* Patience, flexibility, creativity, and strong classroom/group-management skills.
* Bilingual or multilingual skills are a plus.
