Temporary Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN)

Student Health Services provides quality health care for students enrolled at Fayetteville State University. Students are provided with reasonable quality health care for minor illnesses and injuries and are referred to specialists or consultants when necessary. Each healthcare visit is used as an opportunity for health education. Student Health Services provides student-centered medical and wellness services that are affordable and accessible. The Temporary Licensed Practical Nurse ( LPN) assists in the delivery of health care to students within the Fayetteville State University Student Health Clinic. The LPN gathers and documents patient information and symptoms, obtains vital signs, carries out prescribed treatments, administers medications and immunizations as ordered, provides health promotion education, reports changes in patient condition, assists providers with examinations and procedures, and documents observations and care rendered. The position supports safe, efficient clinic operations, continuity of care, and the health and well-being of the college student population.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

* Conduct sick call and collect pertinent data for acutely ill or injured students; promptly notify the Director and/or provider when a patient's condition warrants immediate attention or a change in the plan of care

* Obtain chief complaint, relevant medical history, vital signs, and other clinical information

* Assist providers with routine examinations, laboratory work, and special procedures

* Administer medications, immunizations, oxygen, and prescribed treatments in accordance with provider orders, standing orders, policies, and procedures; observe for desired effects and adverse reactions

* Assist with clinical procedures and treatments such as suture removal, dressings, hot soaks, compresses, splints, slings, and care of minor eye or ear concerns as directed

* Provide health promotion teaching and reinforce healthy lifestyle and preventive health practices

* Document pertinent observations, treatments, medications, and nursing care accurately and timely in the medical record

* Assist with referrals and continuity of care, including communication with off-campus health care providers and coordination of follow-up appointments, laboratory reports, imaging reports, and emergency department records

* Maintain patient confidentiality and positive, professional relationships with students, families, coworkers, and the university community

* Support efficient clinic flow and maintain supplies, equipment, and readiness of clinical areas for patient care

* Screen student health forms for compliance with North Carolina immunization requirements

* Provide appropriate support and referral for students experiencing an emotional crisis within the scope of the LPN role

* Maintain current knowledge of off-campus health care resources available to students and provide complete handoff reports to other clinical staff as appropriate

* Perform other clinic support functions as needed, including telephone, reception, documentation, logs, and restocking responsibilities

* Current license to practice as a Licensed Practical Nurse in the State of North Carolina

* Current CPR/ BLS certification

* Considerable knowledge of practical nursing techniques, patient care, sanitation, personal hygiene, and basic health and safety practices applicable to the clinical setting

* Ability to make objective and accurate clinical observations, recognize changes in patient condition, and

function effectively during emergencies and stressful situations

* Ability to use appropriate clinical equipment and follow Student Health Services policies, procedures, standing orders, and provider directions

* Strong communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to establish effective working relationships with patients, families, coworkers, and the university community

* Clinical Skills: Knowledge of practical nursing techniques, patient care, treatments, medications, immunizations, and clinical procedures within the LPN scope of practice.

* Observation and Judgment: Ability to make accurate clinical observations, recognize changes in patient condition, and promptly communicate concerns to the appropriate provider or Director.

* Communication Skills: Effective oral and written communication skills and the ability to provide clear patient education and professional service.

* Organization and Time Management: Ability to prioritize patient care needs, support clinic flow, maintain accurate documentation, and keep supplies and clinical areas ready for use.

* Emergency Response: Ability to remain composed and function efficiently in urgent, emergency, and stressful situations.

* Professionalism and Compassion: Ability to maintain confidentiality and provide respectful, student-centered care while working effectively with a diverse university community.

* A minimum of one year of experience as a Licensed Practical Nurse

* Experience in a physician office, emergency department, health department, student health service, or similar ambulatory clinical environment

* Experience working with adolescent, young adult, or college student populations

* Strong oral and written communication, organization, decision-making, interviewing, and listening skills
