| About the Department |
The Department of Molecular Biomedical Sciences (
MBS) is one of three departments in the College of Veterinary Medicine at North Carolina State University and consists of 40 - 45 faculty members who have variety of research, clinical, and teaching interests and responsibilities. The department is staffed, in addition to faculty, by: 8-15 research scholar postdoctoral fellows, 20 - 30
EHRA non-faculty employees, 15 - 20 adjunct faculty members, 12 - 18 residents and interns, 8 - 13 research and teaching technicians, numerous graduate students and temporary employees and 3 administrative personnel.
The Department of Molecular Biomedical Sciences trains Doctors of Veterinary Medicine, House Officers, graduate students, and postdoctoral fellows. Our faculty consists of recognized experts in the fields of cell biology and physiology, cancer biology, developmental biology, environmental science and toxicology, genomics, infectious diseases, neuroscience, nutrition, pharmacology, anesthesiology, radiology, and reproductive biology. Our goals are to advance veterinary medical science through innovative basic and applied research, and by mentoring and inspiring students, providing world-class clinical and diagnostic services, and offering the public the latest knowledge through innovative extension and engagement activities.
Our research faculty work in state-of-the-art research facilities. Our graduate students belong to any of a number of graduate programs offered at the university. In addition, faculty oversee the following clinical sections: anesthesia, clinical nutrition, pharmacology, and the radiology residency. |

| Essential Job Duties |
The Department of Molecular Biomedical Sciences (
MBS) is seeking an Accountant to serve as a key financial steward and trusted advisor to departmental leadership, faculty, and staff. In this role, you will manage a diverse portfolio of funds, including state appropriations, discretionary funds, grants, gifts, and service centers, ensuring fiscal integrity and driving budget operations in close partnership with the
CVM Business Office.
Key Responsibilities
Budget & Faculty Support: Reconcile accounts, prepare annual financial reports for faculty, manage journal vouchers/IDTs, direct year-end closeouts, and oversee payroll salary distributions. Procurement & Reconciliations: Review and approve marketplace requisitions, vouchers, vendor registrations (PaymentWorks), and P-card reconciliations to ensure policy compliance and timely vendor payments. Contracts & Grant Administration: Monitor grant expenditures and fund allocations, prevent deficits, assist with grant closeouts, process university contracts, and calculate annual salary releases. Travel Management: Guide faculty and staff through university travel processes, reviewing and approving travel authorizations and reimbursements.
Qualifications & Expectations
Technical Knowledge: Strong grounding in GAAP, budgetary practices, and financial reporting. Systems Proficiency: Experience with university financial systems (e.g., Wolfpack Reporting System/WRS), advanced Excel/Microsoft Office, and Google Workspace. Core Competencies: Detail-oriented, strong analytical skills, exceptional organizational ability, and a service-oriented approach with a commitment to high-touch support (24-hour response standard).

| Other Responsibilities |
- The standard timeframe for responding to faculty, staff, and administrators with results is 24 hours. Maintaining this level of customer service is essential to the department's successful operation.
- Thorough knowledge of accounting and budgetary principles, practices, and procedures.
- Demonstrated ability to analyze complex financial data and prepare accurate reports.
- Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple projects and meet strict deadlines.
- Proficiency with the university financial system: Wolfpack Reporting System (WRS), Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Outlook), and Google Workspace (Google Sheets, Docs, Drive, etc.)
- Excellent communication skills and ability to collaborate with faculty, staff, and administrators.

Qualifications
| Minimum Education and Experience |
A Bachelor's degree with at least 12 credit hours in accounting; an Associate's degree in Accounting; or an Associate's degree in Business (or a related field) with at least 12 credit hours in accounting. An equivalent combination of education, training, and experience may be substituted.
All degrees must be from an appropriately accredited institution.

| Preferred Qualifications |
- Knowledge of NC State's financial systems (PeopleSoft, WOLF Reports, Labor and Payroll Distribution Reports, PINS, RADAR, PMR).
- Advanced Excel skills for budget projections, spending analysis, and report creation.
- Familiarity with university, state, and federal procurement and compliance regulations.
- Experience preparing and reconciling sponsored project accounts and department-level financials.
