Posting Summary
Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, is seeking a Visiting Researcher for the Department of NeuroMetabolism in the Child Health Institute at the Robert Wood Johnson Medical School.

Under the direction of Principal Investigator, the Visiting Researcher will be responsible for molecular cloning, cell culture, confocal imaging, and data analysis. As part of their career development to transition to the next phase of their career, the visiting researcher(s) will be trained in improving their experimental design skills and their oral and written presentation skills. Multiple resources for career development to aid with these requirements will be provided by the PI.

Among the key duties of this position are the following:

  • Design, perform and analyze experiments focused on mammalian cell culture including isolation and expansion of cells from bot murine and human tissues; perform cell survival assays; and transfection of mammalian cells.
  • Assist in maintaining laboratory instrumentation such as centrifuges, electrophoresis, and confocal microscopes.
  • Assist in the establishment of performance standards, the selection of research methodologies and instrumentation, and coordination of experimental approaches in support of CNM research.
  • Keep up to date on the relevant literature in both peer-reviewed and preprint form and assist the PI in preparation of manuscripts and grant applications relevant to own experimental work.
  • Assists in the instruction and training of students (undergraduate/graduate) in techniques and procedures of the laboratory.

Qualifications






Minimum Education and Experience

  • Qualified candidate(s) should be a recent graduate; bachelor's degree is required; master's degree in biology or biomedicine preferred.
  • Majored in Medicine, Neuroscience, Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, or relevant biological sciences. Must have written and published scientific articles.
  • Prior experience with biomedical research (either basic or clinical research).

Certifications/Licenses
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Training in basic experimental techniques, including histology, rodent brain dissection, stereotaxic surgeries for intracerebroventricular injections, and fluorescent microscopy.
  • Must have effective oral and written communication skills; and ability to understand and communicate in English to sufficiently perform the job duties.
  • Must be computer literate with proficiency and working knowledge of database and reporting tools such as Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
  • Must be able to assist in daily lab management, including training and direct oversight of personnel and students.

Preferred Qualifications

  • The applicant(s) should have a solid background in neuroscience and/or cell biology and be able to perform molecular, cellular, imaging experiments and must be able to conduct independent experiments and prepare written and oral reports.
  • Experience with animal behavioral techniques is preferred.
  • Applicant should be highly motivated, have excellent organizational skills, and be able to work collaboratively and independently under the guidance of the PI.
  • Candidate(s) with a history of prior publications preferred.
  • Excellent writing skills with experience in writing grants, fellowships, manuscripts, or scientific reports strongly preferred.

  • Must be able to work in a laboratory environment.
  • Must be able to perform laboratory research.
  • Exposure: laboratory environment, moderate noise, hazardous chemicals.
  • Some lifting may be required: laboratory items and/or boxes.
  • Walking, standing, and sitting is required.


Work Environment:

  • Must pass employee health clearance, TB Test and required laboratory safety training.
  • Must follow all safety precautions in laboratory, as required.
