Tenure Track Assistant Professor of Nineteenth Century Art

The Department of History of Art and Architecture at Vanderbilt University in Nashville,

Tennessee invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track position Assistant Professor of

Nineteenth-Century Art History to begin in August 2027. We seek a candidate whose research

and teaching consider nineteenth-century art in transnational contexts with a preference for

candidates whose teaching and research complement the department’s existing strengths. In

addition to outstanding scholarly potential, successful candidates will demonstrate their readiness

to contribute to our undergraduate majors, our master’s degree programs, and our new

interdisciplinary minor and graduate certificate in Museum and Market studies. For current

With a teaching load of 2-2, the candidate will be expected to teach a combination of

introductory surveys (e.g. Nineteenth-Century Art, History of Art Renaissance to the Present)

and area-specific courses. This position will also support the Arts & Science Core curriculum.

Within our new Museum and Markets programs, candidates should be prepared to offer a course

on the nineteenth-century art market, museum culture, or the gallery system. Ideas for travelembedded

courses are welcome and generous funding is available. There are opportunities to

engage with initiatives across campus including the Engine for Art, Democracy and Justice, the

Center for Latin American, Caribbean, and Latinx Studies, the Vanderbilt Museum of Art, the

W.T. Bandy Center for Baudelaire and Modern French Studies, the Robert Penn Warren Center

for the Humanities and as well as Vanderbilt’s campuses in New York city and San Francisco.

A PhD in Art History, Visual Studies, or a related field must be in hand no later than

August 1, 2027. Applications should include a cover letter; a CV; writing sample of no more

than 25 pages; statement of teaching philosophy (and evidence of effectiveness including recent

teaching evaluations). Letters of recommendation will be solicited from short-listed candidates.

Review of applications will begin November 15th, 2026. Completed applications received by

position is filled.
