Environmental Inspector 2

Job Summary

Environmental Inspector 2 supports environmental compliance for electric and gas construction projects. Position level within the Environmental Inspector job family is based on education, experience, capability, and professional certifications.

This role reviews environmental plans, conducts site inspections, documents findings, recommends corrective actions, and advises project teams on permits, best management practices, and resource protection. The position requires independent fieldwork, regular travel within the assigned region, collaboration across functions, and occasional work outside normal hours or overnight.

Essential Functions

• Review environmental compliance plans and provide technical input during planning, bid, constructability, and preconstruction activities.

• Conduct and document inspections and audits, including observations, photographs, reports, and required certifications.

• Evaluate erosion and sediment controls, water-resource crossings, sensitive-resource protections, project boundaries, and restoration activities for compliance.

• Identify noncompliance, spills, contamination, or unanticipated discoveries; recommend corrective actions; and coordinate appropriate response measures.

• Monitor the handling of soil, topsoil, water, waste, spoils, seed, and other materials, including sampling results and restoration requirements.

• Communicate findings and requirements to stakeholders, contractors, and resource specialists; provide guidance, training, and presentations.

• Maintain document control, required credentials, and continuous improvement practices.

• Travel safely to project sites and provide coverage outside normal hours or assigned areas, including overnight stays when required.

Required Qualifications for Position

• Associate degree in Environmental Science, Natural Resources/Management, Ecology, or a related field, or equivalent work experience.

• 3+ years of environmental or stormwater inspection experience.

• Ability to obtain and maintain required environmental certifications, NiSource Operator Qualifications, and applicable state credentials.

• Valid driver's license, ability to travel, and physical ability to navigate construction sites and utility rights-of-way.

• Knowledge of environmental compliance, permitting, erosion and sediment control, restoration, and utility construction practices.

• Ability to interpret project plans, assess risks, develop corrective actions, communicate effectively, and use Microsoft Office and related technology.

Preferred Additional Qualifications for Position

• Bachelor's degree in a related field.

• More than three years of environmental or stormwater inspection experience, including utility construction experience.

• Current CESSWI or CPESC certification.

Physical Demands

Work Environment and Physical Requirements

Work includes frequent travel to construction sites and utility rights-of-way, walking over uneven terrain, driving, using digital devices, and communicating with project teams. Overnight travel and work outside the standard schedule may be required. This description is not intended to list every duty or responsibility of the position.
