DescriptionThe Department of History of Art and Architecture at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tennessee invites applications for a full-time, non-tenure track position of Assistant Professor of the Practice of Global Contemporary Art History. This is a 3-year renewable appointment, conditional upon performance and curricular need, to begin in August 2027. We seek a dynamic teacher-scholar who specializes in late 20th and 21st century art. The position’s geographical focus is open with a preference for candidates whose teaching and research expand beyond the department’s existing strengths in modern European and U.S. art history. We welcome scholars who also maintain concurrent critical, curatorial, or studio practices. We are looking for a colleague who, in addition to or in combination with the above, has the vision and knowledge to develop and teach courses on the contemporary art market that contribute to our new interdisciplinary minor in Museum and Market studies. This position will also support the Arts & Science Core curriculum, with the opportunity to teach in the first-year Core or develop an Exploratory Core course.
QualificationsThe position has a teaching load of 3-3 with 1 annual course release for administrative support of our Museums and Markets minor and departmental programming and pre-professional advising. The candidate will be expected to teach a combination of introductory surveys, area specific seminars, and contribute to the College of Arts and Sciences' CORE curriculum. The offering of travel-embedded courses is possible. The nature of the administrative service will be shaped in part by the successful candidate’s skills, interests, and experience, as well as departmental needs. There are opportunities to engage with initiatives across campus including the Engine for Art, Democracy and Justice (Engine for Art, Democracy and Justice | Vanderbilt Uiversity), the Center for Latin American, Caribbean, and Latinx Studies, the Vanderbilt Museum of Art, the Curb Center for Art, Enterprise, and Public Policy, as well as Vanderbilt’s campuses in New York City and San Francisco. A Ph.D. in Art History, Visual Studies, or a related field is required in hand no later than August 1, 2027; teaching experience preferred.
