Clinical Research Analyst - Cornea and Ocular Surface Disease

JOB SUMMARY:

Employee will participate in ongoing clinical research projects focused on complex corneal and external diseases, gaining experience in study design, REDCap-based data management, biostatistics, regulatory processes, manuscript preparation, and implementation of multicenter clinical studies. They will additionally participate in weekly laboratory meetings, grand rounds, monthly Kodachrome conferences, and journal clubs, and will periodically observe clinical care in the Cornea and External Disease clinics at UCSF.

A major component of this fellowship will be participation in international collaborative research with investigators in India. They will contribute to studies of fungal keratitis, including ongoing work related to the FANCY clinical trial and collection of preliminary data and planning activities for future adaptive platform trials in infectious keratitis. Through these projects they will gain firsthand exposure to the conduct of clinical research in diverse healthcare settings and develop an appreciation for global health challenges and international research collaboration. Additional to this, they will also participate in studies investigating decentralized approaches to dry eye disease research, including methods for remote patient assessment and biologic sample collection. These projects seek to expand access to clinical research and facilitate innovative approaches to studying ocular surface disease.

CUSTOM SCOPE:

Under general supervision, provides analytical support for clinical and translational research programs focused on corneal and ocular surface disease. Participates in the design, implementation, and evaluation of research studies and assists with data management, literature review, scientific reporting, and manuscript preparation. Collaborates with faculty and domestic and international investigators to support multicenter clinical studies and patient-centered outcomes research. Applies professional concepts to gather and synthesize information, analyze problems of limited scope, and develop sound recommendations in support of research and programmatic objectives.

The mission is the prevention of blindness worldwide through research and teaching focused on infectious and inflammatory eye disease.

Clinical Research and Data Management

Conducts clinical research activities related to corneal and external disease studies.

• Collects, organizes, and analyzes research data.
• Performs REDCap database management and quality control.
• Assists with regulatory documentation and study implementation.

Multicenter and International Research Coordination

Supports multicenter and international clinical research projects focused on infectious keratitis and ocular surface disease.

• Coordinates communication with collaborators.
• Performs literature review.
• Prepares reports.
• Contributes to project planning and execution.

Research Analysis and Data Summarization

Performs analytical studies and data summarization to support ongoing clinical trials and research initiatives.

• Executes continuous research and data analysis responsibilities.
• Assists with interpretation and presentation of findings.

Scientific Writing and Documentation

Assists with preparation of abstracts, manuscripts, presentations, research proposals, and other scientific documentation.

• Conducts literature searches.
• Prepares preliminary analyses of scientific and regulatory information.

Program Planning and Collaboration

Participates in program planning and collaboration with faculty, fellows, and project staff.

• Attends research meetings, grand rounds, journal clubs, and conferences relevant to program objectives.

Other Duties

Performs other duties as assigned, including administrative support for research activities and special projects.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

• Bachelor's degree in biological sciences, public health, psychology, neuroscience, or related field, or equivalent combination of education and experience
• Basic analytical and quantitative skills
• Experience using Microsoft Office applications and ability to learn research databases and software
• Strong written and verbal communication skills
• Ability to organize, prioritize, and manage multiple projects simultaneously
• Ability to maintain confidentiality and exercise sound judgment
• Strong attention to detail and ability to work both independently and collaboratively

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

• Previous research experience in clinical, epidemiologic, or public health research
• Experience with REDCap, Excel, or statistical software
• Experience with scientific writing and literature review
• Interest in medicine, ophthalmology, global health, or patient-centered outcomes research
• Familiarity with database management and research regulatory processes
