Research Associate in Biology

The Department of Biology at the University of Virginia (UVA) invites applications for a postdoctoral Research Associate with expertise in bioinformatics, evolutionary genomics, and population genetics to work in the lab of Dr. Drew Schield (www.schieldlab.org).

The Research Associate will join a collaborative team investigating speciation, adaptation, and sex chromosome evolution using genome-scale datasets. In particular, the researcher will lead in our efforts to generate and analyze long-read genome assemblies for populations of rattlesnakes (Crotalus) that exchange gene flow in secondary contact. These data will be used in pangenome graph analysis to address questions related to nucleotide and structural variation underlying adaptive trait evolution (e.g., venom and cryptic coloration), sex chromosome structural diversity, and the roles of structural variants in complex speciation with gene flow. They will also have the opportunity to lead projects leveraging substantial whole genome sequencing and RNAseq data available in the lab, and to participate in annual collecting trips in the field. Specific project directions are flexible so as to enhance the researcher's interests and career goals while building on existing expertise in the lab.

Strong candidates for the position will have excellent bioinformatics skills for processing and analysis of large genomic datasets as well as knowledge of population genetics analyses, especially those related to demographic inference, identifying signatures of selection, and detecting hybridization and introgression. Experience with genome assembly and annotation is also preferred. The successful candidate will also ideally have molecular laboratory skills associated with DNA and RNA extraction, library preparation, and the ability to troubleshoot and refine protocols. Applicants should be self-driven, have excellent data management skills, demonstrate verbal and written communication skills, and be able to work with a collaborative team. Strong candidates will also have a record of scientific productivity.

The Research Associate will work closely with the PI and members of the Schield lab at UVA while collaborating with the labs of Drs. Blair Perry (Michigan State University), Matthew Holding (University of Michigan), Marjorie Matocq (University of Nevada Reno), Todd Castoe (University of Texas at Arlington), Jesse Meik (Tarleton State University), and Mark Margres (University of South Florida) for access to additional training opportunities. They will also have access to groups within the Evolution, Ecology, and Behavior community at UVA (www.EEBvirginia.org). In the Schield lab, the Research Associate will have the opportunity to mentor graduate and undergraduate students, design and lead research integrating field, molecular, and computational components, prepare conference presentations and publications, and gain teaching experience to the extent that it matches their career goals.

The completion of a PhD degree in Biology or a related field by the start date of the appointment is required. The ideal start date of the appointment will be between October 2026 and March 2027, but other start dates will be considered for highly qualified applicants. This is a one-year appointment that may be renewed for an additional two years (in one-year increments), contingent upon available funding and satisfactory performance.

Salary

The anticipated hiring salary is $60,000 - $65,000 commensurate with experience.
