Location(s): Austin, TX

Job Description
Provides database administration, development, maintenance, performance monitoring, security, recovery, and data modeling support for enterprise database environments.

Key Responsibilities

  • Enters codes to create production databases.
  • Selects and enters utility program codes to monitor database performance, including record distribution and available memory.
  • Directs programmers and analysts to make changes to database management systems.
  • Reviews and corrects programs.
  • Answers user questions and provides technical assistance.
  • Confers with coworkers to determine the impact of database changes on other systems and staff costs associated with database changes.
  • Modifies database programs to increase processing performance through performance tuning.
  • Provides assistance in the planning, development, maintenance, and monitoring of integrated database systems.
  • Ensures conceptual and design phases of new applications are consistent with structural parameters within the database environment.
  • Evaluates requests for new data elements and systems and incorporates them into the existing shared data environment.
  • Coordinates the use of data to ensure data integrity and control redundancy.
  • Loads and reorganizes databases as needed.
  • Performs data modeling and prototyping.
  • Performs logical and physical data modeling, designs relational database models, and creates physical data models from logical data models.
  • Performs security and recovery procedures.
  • Determines and implements database search strategies and storage requirements.
  • Maintains the data dictionary, ensuring uniformity of definitions and establishing standards for its use.
  • Monitors database performance and recommends efficiency improvements.
  • Creates test database environments for application teams, including necessary libraries and procedures.
  • Executes procedures necessary to save, retrieve, and recover databases from hardware and software failures within established procedures.
  • Assists with determining, implementing, and enhancing database security standards.
  • Assists with monitoring disaster recovery procedures and systems.
  • Assists with the installation of database software and with analyzing, designing, and implementing databases.
  • Assists in database benchmarking and threshold testing.
  • Assists with establishing and controlling database security.
  • Assists in the selection of database management software.
  • Ensures database administration and data input, viewing, and output interfaces comply with accessibility standards.
  • Provides support to users in obtaining data and information when accessibility issues arise.

Required Knowledge and Skills

  • Experience in computer systems analysis or computer programming.
  • Knowledge of computer programming and systems design principles, practices, and techniques.
  • Knowledge of computer operations, systems, and procedures.
  • Knowledge of project control and cost estimating techniques.
  • Knowledge of computer programming languages.
  • Knowledge of data processing flowcharting techniques.
  • Knowledge of database structures and theories.
  • Knowledge of current database technologies.
  • Working knowledge of accessibility standards and assistive technologies.
  • Strong database management systems knowledge, including data warehouse management and decision support tools.
  • Experience developing, implementing, and maintaining data warehouses and data marts.
  • Experience with Business Objects and building data dictionaries.
  • Ability to use database access tools for application delivery.
  • Strong familiarity with analysis, planning, and management reporting functions.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Strong teamwork and interpersonal skills.
  • Extremely high analytical ability to address unusual and highly difficult problems.
  • Understanding of benchmarking processes and techniques.
  • Strong interpersonal skills to work effectively with others, motivate employees, and elicit work output.
  • Knowledge of data warehouse data population and data modeling techniques, including Star Schemas, Snowflake Schemas, and highly normalized data models.
  • Experience with GUI-based ETL tools such as Informatica, IBM WebSphere DataStage, or similar tools.
  • Implementation experience with enterprise-class databases such as Teradata, Oracle, SQL Server, or similar technologies.
  • Implementation experience with analytical and reporting tools such as Business Objects, Cognos, Hyperion, MicroStrategy, or similar tools.
  • Experience with the data warehouse implementation process, including business requirements, logical modeling, physical database design, data sourcing and transformation, data loading, SQL, end-user tools, database administration, and SQL performance.
  • Excellent analytical, problem-solving, teamwork, oral, and written communication skills.
  • Proven ability to work successfully with technical and non-technical groups and manage multiple responsibilities.

Minimum Qualifications

  • 5+ years of experience with database management systems, data warehouse management, and decision support tools.
  • 5+ years of experience developing, implementing, and maintaining data warehouses and data marts.
  • 5+ years of experience with Business Objects and data dictionary development.
  • 5+ years of experience using database access tools for application delivery.
  • 5+ years of experience with analysis, planning, and management reporting functions.
  • 5+ years of experience with data warehouse data population and modeling techniques.
  • 5+ years of experience with GUI-based ETL tools such as Informatica, IBM WebSphere DataStage, or similar technologies.
  • 5+ years of experience implementing enterprise-class databases such as Teradata, Oracle, SQL Server, or similar technologies.
  • 5+ years of experience implementing analytical and reporting tools such as Business Objects, Cognos, Hyperion, MicroStrategy, or similar technologies.
  • 5+ years of experience with end-to-end data warehouse implementation processes, including requirements, modeling, database design, data sourcing, transformation, loading, SQL, and end-user tools.
  • 5+ years of experience demonstrating strong analytical, problem-solving, teamwork, and communication skills.
  • 5+ years of experience working effectively with technical and non-technical groups and managing multiple responsibilities.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Oracle Database experience.
  • Power BI report creation experience.
