We invite applications from all areas of AI. Areas of current interest include the following: Foundations of machine learning Multimodal models Alignment and AI safety Physical and embodied AI Reasoning Systems that make large models trainable and deployable This list is illustrative rather than exhaustive. Applicants whose work falls outside these areas are encouraged to apply, including applicants whose work spans artificial intelligence and another discipline. Artificial intelligence is a growth area for the campus and for the department. The Department of Computer Science offers a Bachelor of Science in Artificial Intelligence, and these two positions are part of a broader cluster of AI hiring. The department has recently made strategic investments in two AI Centers. Computing has been expanded alongside that: a Research Computing reinvestment has added NVIDIA H200 capacity, supported in part by the college and the department, with a share of it dedicated to teaching. AI research at CU Boulder extends beyond computer science into partners across the College of Engineering and Applied Science, cognitive science, information science, and collaborations with the federal laboratories along the Colorado Front Range. The Boulder area also supports a growing concentration of companies working in artificial intelligence and robotics. The Department of Computer Science is one of the largest departments within the College of Engineering and Applied Science at the University of Colorado Boulder (CU Boulder). The department is home to over 50 tenured and tenure-track faculty plus 25 instructional faculty and now includes about 2000 undergraduate and 500 graduate students. What Your Key Responsibilities Will Be Successful candidates will be expected to engage in undergraduate and graduate teaching and mentoring; develop an externally funded research program in their technical area; contribute professional leadership and service to their unit, the college, and their professional community; and cultivate and contribute to the inclusive excellence of our academic community. The typical distribution of work for this role is 40% teaching, 40% scholarly and creative work (research), and 20% leadership and service. What You Should Know The anticipated start date for these positions is Fall 2027; however, a later start date may be negotiated. Only one application is necessary to be considered for both positions. What We Can Offer The anticipated academic year salary range for this position at the Assistant Professor rank is $130,000 - $145,000. A relocation stipend may be available within CEAS guidelines. A recruitment incentive is available within Department guidelines. What We Require Applicants must have earned a research doctorate in Computer Science or a related discipline before starting a tenure-track faculty appointment. What You Will Need A research agenda that can be pursued with external funding at CU Boulder. Ability to teach at both the undergraduate and graduate level within the artificial intelligence curriculum. Research interests that connect with existing work in the department or elsewhere on campus. What We Would Like You to Have A record of peer-reviewed publication in artificial intelligence or a related field, calibrated to career stage. Experience teaching or mentoring students at the undergraduate or graduate level. Experience collaborating across research groups, departments, or disciplines.
