 About us

The Department of Population Medicine and Diagnostic Sciences in the College of Veterinary Medicine at Cornell University invites applications for a full-time tenure track faculty position in the Section of Toxicology at the Animal Health Diagnostic Center (AHDC). The AHDC serves as the New York State Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory and is accredited by the American Association of Veterinary Laboratory Diagnosticians (AAVLD). The AHDC has capabilities in a wide range of diagnostic modalities housed in 12 dedicated sections, including a BSL-3 laboratory. The Toxicology Laboratory provides analytical services focusing on the identification and quantitation of drugs, metals, and other potential toxicants, as well as analysis for vitamins and minerals of clinical significance. The Toxicology Laboratory also provides consults to veterinary clients and public health professionals across New York State, the United States, and beyond. The laboratory is supported by the Veterinary Support Services (VSS) team who provide consultations for clients and practitioners on test selection, result interpretation and disease prevention and surveillance.

 The Department of Population Medicine and Diagnostic Sciences advances animal health and welfare through innovative disease diagnosis and prevention, ensures the safety of animal-derived foods, educates the next generation of veterinary professionals, and serves the public good by providing expert clinical, diagnostic, and outreach services to the residents of New York and beyond. We build on three major strengths: the population dynamics of health and disease, interaction with production animals and producers, and the laboratory diagnostic sciences. The AHDC provides a rich environment for toxicologists, with diagnostic specimens submitted from animal populations across the world.

 About the position

The ability of the new faculty member to combine diagnostic service with research endeavors and teaching responsibilities will be important for success. Availability of a substantial volume of case material, excellent analytical capabilities, and veterinary toxicology consultation opportunities provide a springboard for scholarly investigation and the development of an independent research program. The transfer of research developments into novel diagnostic approaches and assays, and of clinical and diagnostic questions into fundable research projects would further contribute to the success of the position. The new faculty member will be expected to collaborate with faculty colleagues leading the DVM clinical curriculum redesign initiative to help develop and teach veterinary toxicology to students using integrated case-based activities and other interactive instructional formats. The service portion of the position will consist of participation in department, college, and university committees and service to the profession through professional societies and boards.

 Required qualifications

The ideal candidate will have a DVM or equivalent degree, and board certification by the American Board of Veterinary Toxicology (ABVT) or American Board of Toxicology (ABT). Residency-trained individuals eligible to become board-certified are also encouraged to apply. Alternatively, those with a DVM and a PhD in veterinary toxicology, chemistry, pharmacology or another closely aligned discipline are equally encouraged to apply.

 The successful candidate must have excellent interpersonal and communication skills; a client-focused approach to diagnostic service; and the willingness to work collaboratively with staff and colleagues in other sections and departments and to contribute to the AHDC’s collegial atmosphere.  Compensation

The expected salary range for this position is $145,000 to $210,000. Offers higher than the published salary range might be considered to meet unique circumstances, qualifications, academic discipline, and experience.
