Overview

Orrick currently has an excellent opportunity for a Business Relationship Manager. This position could be based in any of our U.S. offices and consideration given for 100% remote US locations.


Responsibilities

As a Business Relationship Manager, you will work with senior leaders within business functions and corporate / internal organizations to understand stakeholder needs for technology solutions. In this way, BRMs help ensure that the technology portfolio is aligned to functional and enterprise needs for technology enablement. BRM partners promote awareness of IT's portfolio, gather feedback on IT's offerings and identify emerging needs that the CTO's team should consider. BRMs stimulate, surface and shape business demand for IT solutions and services. They ensure that the business value from those products and services is captured, optimized and recognized by the stakeholder. BRMs complement the IT organization's product, project and program management teams who have tactical, operational and solution delivery responsibilities.

  • Establishes and fosters strong partnerships with IT, business departments and internal departments operational leaders and the BRM team. Develops a full understanding of core operational processes, products, services, stakeholders and technologies available. Leverages those relationships, combined with business and technical expertise, to influence the development of technology initiatives and investments that maximize operational efficiency, effectiveness, collaboration and a positive customer and employee experience.
  • Understands the business' goals, opportunities and challenges, and organizational strategies. Explicitly factors the operational function, business and customer perspectives into decision-making about demand. Proactively and continually monitors stakeholder satisfaction with IT and provides follow-up with executive leaders based on internal and external feedback. Works toward achieving a mutually beneficial, win/win relationship.
  • Drives reconciliation of business unit needs and desires with the IT organization's service catalog. Helps align what the business unit needs in terms of what the IT organization can and does provide while at the same time provides input that helps to evolve the IT service catalog. Clearly understands project ROIs and communicates whether and how expected business outcomes have been achieved. Demonstrates sensitivity to organizational priorities and identifies ways to overcome obstacles to achieve project objectives. Responds with urgency to reported escalations and avoids or minimizes customer and business impact by procuring necessary visibility and commitment from the appropriate IT leadership.
  • Interfaces independently and effectively verbally and in writing with diverse audiences while remaining sensitive to experiential and cultural nuances. Develops and delivers effective presentations and facilitates and participates in meetings with audiences of varying sizes and/or at business locations, as well as at national and regional user, community or peer group meetings. Collects and consolidates data that is relevant to the business and/or situation and presents it in a manner that is suitable for that audience. Prepares for and participates in comprehensive periodic reviews with executive leadership meetings. Comprehends technical situations and can communicate them effectively to executive leadership and customers with executive presence.
  • Demonstrates a strong understanding of the relationship between business activities and their operational and service implications. Provides guidance on effective and innovative use of technology to achieve enterprise strategic objectives. Challenges the status quo by continuously questioning how technology products, services and solution delivery can be improved. Uses critical thinking to identify performance improvement and strategic growth opportunities. Proactively collaborates and implements operational, technical and process improvements which can be used by the business departments to improve service levels, customer retention, and increase operational outcomes. Shares knowledge of technology risks and opportunities to build competitive advantage and improve efficiency and effectiveness of mission operations. Contributes to the formation of IT's strategy. Participates with executives to define new solutions, services or digital channels that drive customer value, improve service efficiency, and increase operational outcomes or customer experience.
  • Understands how the business functions use technology and how to improve customer and employee experience. Uses critical thinking to identify and promote opportunities where the implementation of operational, technical and process improvements will produce a positive impact on the efficiency of the organization. Provides guidance on effective and innovative use of technology to achieve business strategic objectives. Challenges the status quo by continuously questioning how product and technology service and delivery can be improved.
  • Acquires and maintains broad company, industry and technology knowledge to represent the business as a subject matter expert. Provides direction and leadership for the initiatives that have executive level visibility. Provides technology consultation to internal and external partners while limiting operational risk to the enterprise. Understands IT functions, products, services, applications, infrastructures, AI and other technology capabilities and recognizes how these will enable the business to advance their strategic objectives.
  • Provides direction, mentorship, coaching, guidance and thought leadership to less experienced members of the team.
  • Participates in the budgeting and planning process by assisting IT and finance leadership in determining the cost of services delivered to the business departments, including non-standard configurations to meet business and customer needs.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent years of experience.
  • 6 plus years of business relationship management or related experience.
  • Background in legal preferred.
  • Strong interpersonal skills; ability to build strong relationships and collaboration across diverse and matrixed stakeholders and clients
  • Ability to facilitate difficult discussions, prioritize competing interests, and manage both strategic and tactical interests
  • Understands the business perspective and takes necessary action to integrate the business requirements into IT processes and solutions, based on the strategic direction of the enterprise.
  • Partners with operational leaders and associates at all levels within IT, the business departments and other areas of the enterprise to achieve business needs and resolve issues. Must bring a strong desire to grow relationships, inspire stakeholders and identify value.
  • Must have strong situational awareness and the ability to analyze complex problems & synthesize a large variety of information to yield actionable decisions & recommendations.
  • A high degree of empathy; an ability to align and relate to clients
  • Exceptional written, visual and verbal communication skills are required.
  • Demonstrates flexibility by adjusting to a constantly changing work environment. Acts as an agent of change to improve services and implement new solutions.
  • Demonstrates the ability to inspire and motivate action both within IT and with business partners.
  • Provides sound judgment, technical support and direction. Recognizes that errors may cause substantial delays, expense and disruption to key initiatives including potential loss of constituent satisfaction.

Compensation and Benefits

The expected salary range for this position is:

  • New York City, Silicon Valley, and San Francisco $160,000 - $195,000
  • Washington DC, Los Angeles, Orange County, Santa Monica, Sacramento, Boston, and Seattle $155,000 - $190,000
  • All Other US Locations $150,000 - $185,000

Orrick is committed to providing a comprehensive, competitive, and thoughtful total compensation package to our attorneys and staff, wherever they work. This compensation and benefits information is based on the Orrick's estimate as of the date of publication and may be modified in the future. The level of pay within the range will depend on a variety of job-related factors that may include, but not limited to, qualifications, relevant experience or education, particular skills or expertise, geography. Other compensation may include an annual discretionary merit bonus, which would be determined by Firm and individual performance.
