Job Summary :

To provide highest quality health care services in a professional and competent manner, by using ionizing radiation for diagnostic purposes to produce mammographic images for interpretation by a licensed practitioner. The Scope of Practice being an extended practice to include medical imaging techniques and related procedures to demonstrate breast anatomy.

Job Description

Essential Responsibilities:

1. Performs breast imaging procedures.

a. Corroborates patient's clinical history with procedure, assuring information is documented and available for use by a licensed practitioner.

b. Prepares patient for procedures by providing instructions to obtain desired results, gain cooperation, and minimize anxiety.

c. Selects and operates breast imaging equipment and associated devices to achieve desired results.

d. Determines radiographic technique exposure factors.

e. Immobilizes patient as required for appropriate examination, explaining the need for breast compression during mammography.

f. Applies principles of radiation protection to minimize exposure to patient, self, and others.

g. Positions patient to best demonstrate anatomic area of interest, respecting patient ability and comfort.

h. Verifies informed consent for and assist a licensed practitioner with interventional breast procedures; needle localizations, aspirations, biopsies, ductograms.

i. Practices aseptic techniques as necessary.

j. Assumes responsibility for provision of physical and psychological needs of patients during procedures.

k. Evaluates mammograms or other breast images for technical quality, assuring proper patient identification is recorded.

l. Performs radiography of surgical and/or pathologic breast specimens.

m. Prepares, identifies, and/or administers contrast media and/or medications as prescribed by a licensed practitioner.

n. Initiates basic life support actions when necessary.

o. Understands methods and is capable of providing or assisting with physical breast examination or palpation.

p. Responsible for performing and record keeping of quality control for the mammography area and equipment in accordance with current ACR and FDA accreditation standards.

q. Assist with breast related ultrasound examinations utilizing preferred breast ultrasound imaging techniques.

2. Provides patient education by describing tests and procedures and provides approved (ACS) instruction for Breast Self-Exam techniques.

3. Assumes responsibility for assigned area and reports equipment malfunction. This includes maintaining the appearance and cleanliness of area and restocking of area supplies.

4. Provides input for supply decisions.

5. Provides practical instruction for students and/or other health care professionals.

6. Participates in the department's quality assessment and improvement plan. May be responsible for specific quality control duties in the specialty area.

7. Use and understand image processing requirements in accordance with current American College of Radiology, MQSA and/or other accrediting agency standards.

8. Maintains knowledge of sterile supplies and techniques utilized for procedures performed in the mammographic area.

9. Complies with minimum standards as noted on the cover page of job description.

10. Participates in surveys/inspections by accreditation agencies.

11. Conducts and/or participates in community education programs regarding Women's Health or breast related topics on an as needed basis.

12. Use common sense and special medical skills to care for the sick or handicapped with regard to the patient's age and condition. Maintains a level of competence as required by hospital and departmental guidelines for Age Specific Competency.

Education and Experience Required:

1. Must have a high school diploma or equivalent and be a graduate of an approved School of Radiographic Technology and have the credentials as stated in IX Vocational Preparation

2.Should be an experienced Mammographer demonstrating a knowledge base and experience to successfully complete breast procedures.

3. 1-2 years of experience preferred, as well as, applicable computer experience.

Mandatory Licensure/Certifications:

Staff technologists perform radiography on a Comprehensive Practice Level. Individuals must demonstrate competency to meet state licensure and certification requirements defined by law for whole body radiography and maintain the credential R. T. (R) ARRT, or equivalent.

1.Be certified by the State of Indiana.

2.Be a R.T.(R)(M) ARRT in good standing.
