| Brief Summary of Work for this Position |
The temporary Medical Laboratory Technician is responsible for the daily operation of the Student Health Center Lab. Duties include performing waived and moderately complex test procedures in the areas of serology, microbiology, microscopy and hematology as well as interpreting results, drawing blood, preparing specimens that are being sent to the reference lab, assisting with the
CAP survey process, and performing quality controls as needed. In addition, this position will be responsible for resolving or attempting to resolve procedural and/or instrumentation problems, communicating information for clinical use, supporting the medical staff, training staff on lab procedures, and preparing and maintaining the lab for
CLIA inspection along with Lab Director. Based on qualifications and experience they will serve as the lab content expert/technical consultant to the rest of the staff. |
| Minimum Education and Experience Requirements |
- A complete knowledge of the Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendment is required.
- A general knowledge of the basic pathophysiological processes being monitored and how medical laboratory science is applied is required.
- Experience in blood collection and processing is required.
- Excellent problem-solving skills are required.
- Skill in the use of laboratory equipment and the performance of procedures is required.
- Must have the ability to effectively communicate with patients, families and colleagues.

- Either a bachelor's degree in a laboratory science or medical technology AND at least 2 years laboratory training or experience, or both, in non-waived testing OR an associate's degree in medical technology, medical laboratory science or clinical laboratory science AND have at least 4 years of laboratory training or experience, or both, in nonwaived testing is preferred for the temporary medical laboratory technician role.
- Previous experience in college health or a clinic-based lab is preferred.
ASCP Certification is preferred.
