Leidos has an immediate need for a Research Scientist I to support the Expeditionary and Trauma Medicine Department at the Naval Medical Research Unit San Antonio (NAMRU-SA) in San Antonio TX.NAMRU-SA serves as one of the leading research and development laboratories for the U.S. Navy and conducts gap driven combat casualty care, craniofacial, and directed energy research to improve survival, operational readiness, and safety of Department of Defense (DoD) personnel engaged in routine and expeditionary operations.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Develops and conducts protocol-driven scientific research addressing various aspects of military medicine; may lead independent research projects from conception to completion

  • Writes protocol-driven research proposals, animal use protocols, human use protocols, technical reports, final reports, and peer-reviewed manuscripts in coordination with Government Principal Investigator (PI)

  • Develops various presentation materials and presents findings at technical and professional meetings

  • Prepares experimental subjects, sets up experimental equipment, and aids in training and development of experimental subjects for experimental procedures in accordance with approved animal or human use protocols

  • Provides support in development of establishment of in vivo and in vitro model systems, data acquisition, and data analysis

  • Assists in the maintenance of a clean and operational lab space as required

  • Routes administrative paperwork related to scientific products

  • Maintains data and records securely, including the use of an assigned laboratory notebook

  • May perform surgical procedures on animal models for both survival and non-survival

  • Mentors junior research associates and research technicians

Qualifications

  • PhD with a one (1) year research experience

  • Strong experimental design, statistical analysis, and data interpretation skills, including hands-on experience with ELISA and flow cytometry (sample preparation through data analysis)

  • Proven ability to lead cross-functional project teams, coordinate tasks, and maintain high laboratory-quality and compliance standards

  • Experience in animal research conducted in alignment with all regulatory and institutional requirements

  • Prior experience in a military medical laboratory preferred

  • Ability to obtain and maintain required life-support certifications (AHA BLS, Healthcare Provider Course, or American Red Cross CPR; web-based courses not accepted)

  • Willingness to complete annual occupational health exams to maintain facility access clearance

  • Due to Federal contract requirements, US citizenship is required.

  • The candidate will be required to acquire, at a minimum, a SECRET classification access level. Preference will be given to a candidate who already has this clearance level.
