THE POSITION

Begin an exciting career as a Diesel and Construction Equipment Mechanic Trainee with the Sullivan County Maintenance Organization. This role is great for individuals who enjoy working with tools and machinery and want to grow their mechanical skills. DESCRIPTION OF WORK

This trainee position provides structured on the job training to develop skills in repairing and maintaining diesel and gasoline powered equipment. As a Diesel and Construction Equipment Mechanic Trainee, you will perform the following duties:

  • Repair Training: Assist with repairs and overhauls of cars, trucks, and heavy equipment while learning proper techniques
  • Maintenance Skills: Participate in preventative maintenance tasks to keep vehicles and equipment in safe working condition
  • Diagnostic Learning: Use diagnostic tools to help identify mechanical issues and determine correct repair methods
  • Inspection Support: Assist with safety and emissions inspections and complete related records and forms
  • Safety Practices: Learn and follow safety procedures, maintain clean work areas, and report injuries or hazards
  • Field Adjustments: Perform minor adjustments and support senior mechanics with major repairs and equipment servicing

Work Schedule and Additional Information:

  • Full-time employment
  • Work hours are 4:00 AM to 12:00 PM, or 12:00 PM to 8:00 PM, Monday - Friday, with a 30-minute lunch
  • May require travel, overtime, and dual shifts. Work hours may vary during winter season.
  • Telework: You will not have the option to telework in this position.
  • Salary: Selected candidates who are new to employment with the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania will begin employment at the starting annual salary of $48,802 (before taxes).

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE, TRAINING & ELIGIBILITY

QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum Experience and Training Requirements:

  • Two years as a Tradesman Helper (Commonwealth job title or equivalent Federal Government job title, as determined by the Office of Administration) working in the automotive field; or
  • Graduation from a post-high school diesel technology curriculum of an accredited trade or technical school; or
  • An equivalent combination of experience and training.

Special Requirements:

  • This position requires employees to possess an active Pennsylvania Class A or B Commercial Driver Learner's Permit or License with the Air Brake Restriction (L) and Manual Transmission Restriction (E) removed on the first day of employment.
  • This position requires employees to possess an active Medical Examiner's Certificate in accordance with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations on the first day of employment.
  • This position requires employees to obtain a valid Pennsylvania Class 4 or 7 Inspection Mechanic Certification during the probationary period.
  • This position is required to obtain an active Tank Vehicle Endorsement (N) within the six-month probationary period.

Additional Requirement:

  • This position requires operation of vehicles or equipment with a manual transmission within the six-month probationary period.
  • Employees may be required to obtain and maintain CDL endorsements and certifications necessary to operate specific pieces of equipment.
  • This position is subject to Drug and Alcohol testing in accordance with Federal Regulations.
  • Mechanic Trainees are required to possess a basic set of tools, as a requirement to perform their job duties. Tools outside of this basic set are supplied by PennDOT as needed.
  • You must be able to perform essential job functions.
