UMSL Police Job Description
The Police Lieutenant provides shift-level command supervision and operational leadership for UMSL campus public safety, ensuring timely emergency response, supervising sworn and civilian personnel, overseeing parking and transportation, supporting accreditation and compliance, and advancing recruitment/retention and community engagement. This role requires leadership judgment, cross-functional coordination, and the ability to balance public safety priorities with customer-focused transportation services in a higher education environment. As with all positions, may perform other job-related responsibilities as needed to support departmental and campus-wide needs. Primary Responsibilities vary based on assigned duties, as Police Lieutenants are expected to respond to operational needs and perform a variety of tasks and responsibilities in support of the Police Department. SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES Administrative supervision of sworn officers and civilian staff assigned to the shift: hiring input, setting performance expectations, conducting performance reviews, performance management, coaching, discipline, and handling employee relations matters. Employment is contingent on background check, drug screening, and psychological evaluation consistent with public safety hiring. Shift
Varies based on operational needs; evenings, weekends, and on-call availability may be required. Minimum Qualifications
"Bachelor's degree or an equivalent combination of education and experience and at least 3 years of experience from which comparable knowledge and skills can be acquired is necessary. Must obtain and maintain Missouri POST certification in accordance with current state requirements. Certification may be required prior to appointment and is mandatory once employed. Anticipated Hiring Range
