Special Procedures Technologist - RWJBarnabas Health

At RWJBarnabas Health, the Special Procedures Technologist plays a critical role in patient care and operational excellence. Operating with a high level of independence, they perform complex special radiology angiographic and interventional procedures according to strict medical, legal, and professional imaging standards. They are responsible for exercising professional judgment during scans, ensuring accurate patient positioning, delivering age-specific care, and maintaining seamless workflow collaboration within the imaging department.

A typical day for a Special Procedures Technologist may include:

  • Prepares patients for procedures, clearly explains the process, and positions patients for rapid sequence filming during contrast media administration
  • Operates diagnostic equipment, fluoroscopy tools, computers, and applications necessary to ensure a safe and accurate diagnostic and therapeutic procedure
  • Assist physicians and radiologists during angiographic and interventional procedures by scrubbing, circulating, or monitoring activities
  • Sets up sterile trays and other equipment following aseptic technique, handles instruments, and scrubs to assist with the passage of catheters and guidewires
  • Calibrates, maintains, and adjusts equipment, and reports equipment failures or other problems immediately to the appropriate support or departmental leadership
  • Monitors and calls out equipment readings, alerting the physician immediately to any changes in patient condition
  • Utilizes EMR, scheduling, and PACS systems to enter accurately identified and labeled images of patients, and retrieves old images and films when necessary
  • Demonstrates working knowledge of procedure protocols including prep, positioning, markers, safety, radiation safety, and shielding techniques
  • Collaborates professionally in an invasive or surgical environment, working in close cooperation with physicians, nurses, and other technical staff using A.I.D.E.T. standards
  • Demonstrates initiative, flexibility, and the ability to assume multi-task duties and function under significant time pressures

To be considered for this Special Procedures Technologist opportunity:

  • Graduate of an approved Radiological Technology Program meeting ASRT and New Jersey Certification Board requirements
  • Problem-solving, critical thinking, decisive judgment, collaboration, and the ability to work with minimal supervision
  • Must hold and maintain active Basic Life Support (BLS) certification through the American Heart Association
  • Active registry with the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) in Radiography
  • Minimum of 2 years of radiology experience, with required direct experience in special procedures and scrubbing in sterile environments
  • Ability to lift at least 25 lbs., push/pull 50 lbs., and stand for a minimum of 6 hours daily while wearing lead protection
  • Flexibility to adjust schedule as needed, including weekends and holidays, to meet urgent patient and departmental needs
  • Available to work a full-time 40 hours per week schedule with designated on-call requirements
  • Required to take on-call coverage for 1 day per week
  • Required to participate in a weekend on-call rotation every third weekend (Friday, Saturday, and Sunday) per month
