EDHD 1525W CEHD First Year Experience Instructor

Instructors teaching EDHD 1525W have a commitment and passion for teaching first year students in the College of Education and Human Development. Instructors can expect to facilitate and develop a curriculum that invites students to identify, analyze, and critique important issues that impact our society and our communities. Instructors will work with students on developing skills needed to succeed both in college and in their lives after graduation.

All EDHD 1525 FYE sections share the following common features: i) small classes taught by one instructor; ii) a common book and required common events related to the book that happen outside class time; and iii) student services activities and assignments designed to support holistic student development and pathways toward graduation.

Each section explores a common question: Can one person make a difference? Each course section explores course elements in unique ways from a different lens, based on the expertise of the instructor.

EDHD 1525W is designated as a writing intensive course, students will devote considerable time developing the skills necessary to become successful college-level writers. A variety of tools, including peer review, student instructor conferences, and in-class activities, will help students hone their writing skills. Students will practice writing in different contexts, ranging from short, low stakes writing to longer, more formal writing assignments. Through both shorter, low stakes writing and formal writing assignments, students will practice writing in different contexts.

Core Responsibilities:

  • Training and Development: Instructors of EDHD 1525W are required to attend once monthly 60 minute virtual development discussions September - December.
    • Summer training and development workshops are intended to directly support course/syllabus development. Each instructor will attend 3 ninety minute summer training workshops each month during June, July, and August. These are virtual and recorded in Zoom video conferencing.
  • Common Events: Instructors are required to attend two common events 1.5 hours each September - December. These events are planned by the college and directly connected to the curriculum in EDHD 1525W.
  • Course Development: Each instructor is responsible for developing their own syllabus. A sample syllabus and Canvas course template are available. Instructors will also develop a course blurb of 500 words or less describing their EDHD 1525W section to be used during summer orientation.
  • Teach up to two sections of EDHD 1525 First Year Experience course in the fall and two sections of an identified undergraduate course(s) in the spring.
  • Supporting students in becoming college writers through a process developing written papers with a minimum of 2 revisions.
  • Grade student exams, papers and final projects
  • Submit grades

Course/Curriculum Development:

  • Review and develop the current course materials and make adjustments to best meet the needs of students
  • Teach with and incorporate books associated with the EDHD 1525W
  • Attend regular faculty meetings throughout semester to design curriculum
  • Regular revision and or rebuilding of the course given the centrality of common book to the curriculum
  • Meet with student services as intentional partnership to support students
  • Attend pedagogical trainings to support faculty in writing intensive course

Student Development/Advising:

  • Respond to student inquiries and meet with students as needed
  • Evaluate student performance
Qualifications

Bachelors degree is required.

Pay and Benefits

Pay Range: $2,000 per credit; depending on education/qualifications/experience.
