What You'll Do

As a Social Services Program Specialist, you will serve as a trusted resource for individuals seeking assistance and support. Key responsibilities include:

Client Intake & Eligibility Services

• Conduct interviews in person, by phone, and online to assess client needs and eligibility.
• Guide applicants through program requirements and application processes.
• Verify documentation and review eligibility information for completeness and accuracy.
• Connect individuals and families with available social service programs and community resources.
• Identify emergency needs related to housing, food, healthcare, childcare, financial assistance, and other essential services.
• Make referrals to appropriate community organizations and support agencies.

Case Management & Program Administration

• Open, maintain, review, and close cases for programs such as:
• Temporary Assistance
• SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program)
• Medicaid
• Child Care Assistance
• NY Health Exchange Programs
• Calculate and authorize benefits based on program guidelines.
• Monitor ongoing eligibility and compliance with program regulations.
• Conduct recertifications and case reviews to ensure continued program eligibility.
• Identify and address potential overpayments, underpayments, or fraud concerns.

Employment & Self-Sufficiency Support

• Help recipients identify employment opportunities that align with their skills, interests, and experience.
• Assist with job searches, resume preparation, and interview readiness.
• Coordinate employment and training opportunities.
• Monitor progress toward employment and educational goals.
• Support clients in overcoming barriers to employment such as transportation or childcare challenges.

Preferred Knowledge & Experience

Candidates with experience in any of the following areas are encouraged to apply:

• Social services or public assistance programs
• Benefits eligibility determination
• Claims examination or investigations
• Employment counseling or workforce development
• Customer service and case management
• Data collection, recordkeeping, or administrative support

Minimum Qualifications

Candidates must possess a high school diploma or equivalent and meet one of the following requirements:

• One year of experience in a New York State Social Services Department performing duties similar to this position; OR
• Two years of experience evaluating eligibility for benefits, assistance, insurance, unemployment, veterans programs, or similar services; OR
• Three years of experience involving interviewing, data collection, account keeping, or related administrative work; OR
• An equivalent combination of education and experience.

Education substitution: College coursework may substitute for experience on a year-for-year basis.

Special Requirement

Appointees must possess a valid New York State motor vehicle operator's license and maintain it throughout employment.
