What to Expect
Tesla's Manufacturing Engineering team is at the forefront of developing first-of-a-kind processes which allow us to produce amazing vehicles at best-in-class quality and rate, in a safe and ergonomic environment. We are seeking a Sr Manufacturing Engineer - Auxiliary Systems to lead the design and development of the support processes and equipment that enable high-volume machining operations. This includes scrap and chip removal, part cleaning, inspection and gauging, and related auxiliary systems, from process specification and validation through equipment design, installation, and commissioning. The candidate will work closely with internal cross-functional teams, external vendors, and technology partners on auxiliary system development from concept to production. This position requires 25% travel.
What You'll Do
- Lead cross-functional collaboration across process, equipment, mechanical, electrical, controls, project management, and manufacturing stakeholders
- Document product and process requirements for auxiliary equipment specification, including chip/scrap handling, part washing and cleanliness, and in-process/end-of-line inspection systems
- Analyze process cost per unit and drive system development that yields the greatest benefit; lead DFM and sustainability, identifying risks to chip evacuation, cleanliness, and inspectability to achieve lowest overall cost (BOM + manufacturing)
- Develop auxiliary technologies from concept to serial production, including chip conveyors, crushers, and coolant/filtration systems; aqueous and solvent part-cleaning equipment; and automated inspection, gauging, and NDT systems
- Perform detailed line design based on process requirements, throughput, cycle time, and OEE, integrating auxiliary systems with machining cells and material flow; define and optimize process parameters (chip evacuation, coolant cleanliness, wash chemistry/cycle, inspection cycle time and measurement capability)
- Select, qualify, and manage auxiliary equipment, tooling, sensors, and utilities; partner with machining, controls, and facilities on interfaces (coolant, compressed air, wastewater, scrap handling)
- Lead process qualification, including acceptance criteria and verification using statistical tools (GR&R, SPC, Cp/Cpk) and cleanliness/inspection standards as applicable
- Develop and maintain process documentation including equipment specifications, control plans, cleanliness specifications, inspection plans, and standard work instructions
- Manage large-scale projects for new programs: timing plans and cost breakdowns for executive approval, risk identification and corrective action, status reporting, and oversight of installation and commissioning
- Drive continuous improvement of existing auxiliary systems to improve quality, reduce cycle time, increase uptime, and lower cost per part
What You'll Bring
- Degree in Manufacturing, Mechanical, Industrial, or Mechatronics Engineering, or equivalent experience, with 5+ years of related experience supporting high-volume machining or precision manufacturing
- Working knowledge of CNC machining processes and cell architecture, with demonstrated ownership of one or more auxiliary systems: scrap/chip handling, part cleaning/washing, or automated inspection/gauging
- Experience developing, installing, and commissioning high-volume auxiliary equipment (chip conveyors/crushers, coolant filtration and mist collection, aqueous/solvent wash systems, CMM or in-line gauging, vision/NDT inspection, and related automation)
- Strong understanding of GD&T, metrology, and inspection methods (CMM, in-process gauging, vision systems, surface/cleanliness measurement) and/or industrial cleanliness standards and wash process development
- Experience developing, executing, and interpreting DOE for process parameter optimization (wash chemistry/cycle, measurement systems, chip-handling performance)
- Experience using Industrial Engineering methods in high-volume manufacturing processes
- Proficient in CAD software such as CATIA, SolidWorks, Inventor, and/or AutoCAD
- Proficient in PFMEA development and deployment; new product introduction and manufacturing operations experience desired
- Mastery of MS Office suite, Confluence, Jira, etc.
- 25% travel required
