What to Expect
Tesla is seeking a motivated Industrial Engineer to own the design and optimization of material flow and people flow at Gigafactory Nevada. In this role, you will define how parts, work-in-process, finished goods, and people move through a high-volume factory - from dock and warehouse, through line-side delivery and production, to outbound dispatch - and translate that design into layouts, labor plans, and capital projects that Operations can execute. This role sits at the intersection of Manufacturing, Production Control, Supply Chain, Packaging, Facilities, and Construction. You will take ambiguous, system-level problems, decompose them with first-principles analysis and industrial engineering fundamentals, and produce quantified recommendations that leadership can act on. Innovation is expected: you will be asked to challenge existing assumptions about how material is stored, moved, and consumed, and justify better answers with data. The ideal candidate will excel in a demanding and fast-paced environment, work as part of a strong and highly motivated team, and know which tool is the right tool at each stage of a project.
What You'll Do
- Design and optimize end-to-end material flow for new and existing production lines - receiving, warehousing, kitting and sequencing, line-side presentation, WIP movement, and outbound finished goods
- Optimize material delivery methods and strategies across powered industrial equipment, tugger trains, AGV/AMR, conveyance, and forklift-free concepts, selecting manual versus automated solutions based on cost, throughput, and flexibility
- Develop 2D CAD layouts in AutoCAD - flow paths, staging, supermarkets, and line-side buffers - and right-size material flow aisles for mixed pedestrian, AGV/AMR, and PIV traffic, integrating new lines, equipment, and products into the existing factory footprint
- Develop warehouse storage strategies evaluating selective, drive-in, push-back, pallet flow, VNA, and automated racking solutions to maximize throughput, density, and inventory accessibility
- Project warehouse, yard, and factory buffer requirements over time, and partner with Production Control on site logistics including dock scheduling, trailer and yard management, cross-docking, and milk runs
- Own material handling headcount modeling for the site: build and validate labor models that convert volume, routes, cycle times, and shift patterns into required operators, equipment, and staffing plans for both steady state and ramp scenarios
- Conduct time studies, work measurement, and work balance analysis to establish standard work and quantify the labor impact of layout, automation, and process changes
- Design people flow through the site - parking, entrances, walkways, crossings, and internal circulation - analyzing shift arrival and departure surges and on-site traffic to relieve congestion while keeping associate movement symbiotic with production objectives
- Drive structured problem-solving and continuous improvement to remove bottlenecks, reduce material handling touches, and improve factory efficiency, using scenario and "what-if" analysis to compare configurations before capital is committed
- Develop business cases to justify capital investment, present quantified recommendations and executive summaries to leadership, and drive multiple concurrent projects from concept through detailed design, implementation, and handoff to Operations
What You'll Bring
- Degree in Industrial, Mechancial Engineering, Operations Research, Supply chain, or equivalent experience
- 2+ years of industrial or manufacturing engineering experience with an emphasis on material flow, warehousing, logistics, or process improvement (internship experience considered)
- Demonstrated experience designing and optimizing material flow in a high-volume manufacturing environment - a design that was built and validated, not only analyzed
- Deep understanding of material delivery methods (powered industrial equipment, tugger trains, AGV/AMR, conveyor, rail-guided vehicles) and strategies (JIT, kitting, sequencing, forklift-free)
- Strong experience in warehouse and storage concept design, including pallet racking solution design and implementation
- Hands-on experience with labor and headcount modeling, time studies, work measurement, and standard work development
- Experience with layout design in AutoCAD (Revit or similar a plus), including production line integration, warehouse, and material flow layouts
- High proficiency with Excel for modeling and analysis; working knowledge of data tools such as SQL, Power BI, or Tableau; Python or VBA a plus
- Working knowledge of discrete event simulation (FlexSim, AnyLogic, ARENA) and operations research methods - enough to scope a model, partner with the simulation team, and interpret results; ability to build models independently preferred
