Description
Are you passionate about developing state-of-the-art numerical models to better understand Earth's upper atmosphere and space environment? Do you enjoy combining first-principles physics, high-performance scientific computing, and advanced numerical methods to solve challenging problems in space weather and national security? If so, we're looking for someone like you to join our team at APL. We are seeking a Computational Geospace Modeling Research Scientist to conduct research combining thermosphere-ionosphere-magnetosphere coupling, space weather, scientific software engineering, numerical methods, data assimilation, and high-performance computing. The successful candidate will work with experts in geospace physics, computational science, and operational space-weather research to develop, improve, and apply next-generation geospace models supporting both fundamental scientific investigations and sponsor-driven national security applications. Research activities include the development and coupling of large-scale numerical models, scientific software engineering, model validation, data assimilation, satellite drag prediction, upper-atmosphere dynamics, and comparisons with satellite and ground-based observations. The position provides opportunities to contribute to both research and operational modeling capabilities supporting NASA, NOAA, DoW, and Intelligence Community sponsors. The successful candidate will have a demonstrable record of publishing original research in peer-reviewed journals, participation and leadership in proposal development, collaboration with multidisciplinary research teams, and contributions to externally funded research and development programs.
