The City of Mill Valley is pleased to announce the recruitment for our next Chief of Police. Surrounded by the picturesque backdrop of Mt. Tamalpais and towering redwood trees, the City is one of the most scenic places to work in Northern California. As a part of the City’s senior management team, the Chief will play a significant role in goal-setting and policy-making that addresses safety and quality of life issues in Mill Valley. ABOUT MILL VALLEYIncorporated in 1900, the City of Mill Valley is a full-service city operating under a City Council/City Manager form of government. The City Council is elected at-large to four-year staggered terms and includes an annual rotation of the Mayor and Vice Mayor. The City Manager and City Attorney positions are appointed by the City Council. Surrounded by the picturesque backdrop of Mt. Tamalpais and towering redwood trees, the City is one of the most scenic places to work in Northern California. The City of Mill Valley is just 10 miles north of San Francisco and 40 miles from California’s famous wine country. Mill Valley is a town with rich and eclectic cultural history and a lively and engaged citizenry. Mill Valley is primarily a suburban community with distinctive residential neighborhoods representing the many eras of the town’s growth from a small mill town to the modern full-service City it is today. The City’s population is approximately 14,000 residents who live in a 4.8 square mile area. Education and income levels are high with around 75% of the population having a bachelor’s degree or higher. The median resident age is 48 years; median household income is approximately $206,000 and the median home price is over $1.7 million. The City’s nearly 135 full-time staff provide a full range of municipal services to residents and businesses in accordance with the MV2040 General Plan and City Council policy and direction. City staff are committed to delivering those services in an efficient, effective and courteous manner with a high standard of operational excellence. ABOUT THE POSITIONThe Chief of Police will be appointed by and report directly to the City Manager. She/he will be part of the senior leadership team that works collaboratively to provide exceptional services to the community and achieve the priority projects set out by the City Manager and City Council. The Chief of Police manages and directs the 30-member Police Department which is involved with all aspects of law enforcement. Constructive and collaborative relationships are essential for working with colleagues, neighboring law enforcement agencies, local school districts, and community groups. This position provides the opportunity to lead and develop a team of hard-working, dedicated and talented law enforcement professionals who are committed to public service and safety. THE SUCCESSFUL CANDIDATEThe City of Mill Valley is seeking a proven law enforcement professional to lead the Mill Valley Police Department in providing excellent public safety, law enforcement, and community partnership services efficiently, effectively, and equitably. The successful candidate is one who understands that success starts with trust, relationship, and a genuine commitment to service. They will be an approachable, collaborative, and highly engaged leader who brings impeccable integrity, sound judgement, and an incredible work ethic to the role. They will also be adept at team development, community building, and problem-solving at the highest level. The new chief will be an effective and respected mentor who can establish a culture of trust, mutual respect, collaboration, innovation, and community service. The successful candidate will have a career characterized by successful recruitment and effective retention. They will bring their considerable law enforcement experience to bear through effective operations in crime prevention, parking enforcement, community awareness and education, emergency preparedness and response, and other public safety services. The City desires a leader who is known for working with diverse groups and individuals to build and maintain relationships, resulting in constructive compromise and resolution. The ideal candidate will have a demonstrated ability to positively influence and advance the community, culture, and connection of Mill Valley. They must have a willingness and initiative to explore, innovate, and create solutions; often in collaboration with other stakeholders. The ideal chief will successfully balance the daily operational needs of the department with the demands of a highly engaged citizenry.
