The Urology Faculty Practice is a high-volume specialty clinic that focuses on a variety of urological diagnoses. The Urology Clinic treats adults with a wide range urinary tract conditions. These include common problems such as kidney and bladder stones, urinary tract infections, and urinary incontinence, and less common ones, such as obstructions of the urinary tract and painful bladder syndromes. In men, we provide treatment for benign conditions of the prostate gland, erectile dysfunction and male infertility. Our team is also nationally known for expert repair of traumatic injuries to the genitals and urinary tract.

  • Provides nursing care to all Urology patients.
  • Reviews with patients and families, the disease process, the treatment options, as well as the potential outcomes.
  • Provides emotional and psychological support to the urology patient and the family.
  • Acts as a liaison between the patient and a variety of medical disciplines as well as other facilities. Communicates by phone, fax, email or mail.
  • Fosters continuity of care within the healthcare system.
  • Serves as a patient advocate within the health care system.
  • Provides telephone teaching, triage and advice.
  • Documents all nursing actions taken in APEX
  • Obtain insurance authorization for urology medications
  • Respond to clinic emergencies (Code Blue, acute symptoms during clinic visit, etc.)

  • Pend all orders appropriately to providers (medications, refills, imaging, procedures, referrals, etc.)
  • Develop patient education materials for the teams.
  • Participates in the weekly RN and Procedure Team meeting.
  • Represents the UCSF Department of Urology in community activities.

    1. Cystoscopy
    2. Urodynamics
    3. RUG
    4. VCUG
    5. Botox instillations
    6. Stent removals
    7. Nephrostogram tube removals
    8. Other procedures as needed
  • Complete Nurse Visits
    1. PVR Checks
    2. Catheter changes (Foley, SPT, etc)
    3. CIC Teaching
    4. ICI Teaching
    5. Other nurse visits as needed

  • Has completed Apex training and Utilizes Electronic Health Record (APEX) for documentation within the scope of practice of an RN.

  • Open telephone encounters.

  • Open staff messages.

  • Demonstrate the ability to communicate with patients both by telephone, in person and in writing using MyChart in clear, easy to understand and grammatically correct language as an essential function of their job. This includes being able to write clinical instructions that may not be possible using APeX smart phrases and other technical shortcuts.

  • Copies CRM messages to the telephone encounter and follows-up with patient by telephone with more detailed documentation of patient problem(s)

  • Review and oversight of staff documentation within APeX

Required Qualifications:

  • Minimum of two years full-time RN experience
  • Recent, within last two (2) years, surgical nursing experience in an surgical outpatient/ambulatory setting
  • 2 years of ambulatory care experience
  • Knowledge and ability essential to the successful performance of the duties assigned to the position.
  • Recent experience in the use of electronic medical record documentation, preferrable EPIC
  • This position requires flexibility to orient and work at all UCSF Medical Center locations.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Nursing
  • Experience and fluency in working with computers
  • Experience with Urological patient population in inpatient and/or outpatient setting
  • Knowledge of UCSF and APEX
  • Proficiency in handling sterile equipment
  • Knowledge of sterile processing

Licenses/Certifications:

  • Current licensure as an RN by the California Board of Registered Nursing.
  • Current American Heart Association BLS certification

The final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy.


Your placement within the salary range is dependent on a number of factors including your work experience and internal equity within this position classification at UCSF. For positions that are represented by a labor union, placement within the salary range will be guided by the rules in the collective bargaining agreement.
