Job Description

Located in UMKC's Newcomb Hall, this position works closely with fellow Telecom team members to install, inspect, maintain, and support campus communications infrastructure, including copper, coaxial, fiber optic, paging facilities, and telecommunications room hardware.

This individual will also provide technical expertise on communications equipment purchases, placement, configuration, operation, and maintenance.

Successful applicants will be organized, detail-oriented individuals who remain calm under pressure and enjoy solving problems. Strong customer service skills are essential, as this position regularly supports faculty, staff, students, and visitors. Work is often time-sensitive, making communication, prioritization, and multitasking critical to success.

This role offers exposure to a broad range of technologies and projects while supporting a dynamic university environment.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Install, terminate, test, and repair wiring, equipment, and peripherals for voice, data, and video services.
  • Install telecommunications systems, equipment, and peripherals.
  • Interpret written and verbal requests, coordinate work with customers, and complete required documentation.
  • Perform on-call duties when required outside normal operating hours.
  • Utilize Microsoft Office, email systems, telecommunications software, and other technical applications.
  • Perform programming and repair operations on campus telephone and emergency communication systems.
  • Perform mechanical and fusion splicing operations on campus fiber optic infrastructure, both inside and outside facilities.
  • Renovate existing telecommunications rooms and assist with construction of new telecommunications spaces.
  • Locate university telecommunications infrastructure as part of the Missouri One Call Program.
  • Design, deploy, and maintain campus security camera systems.
  • Support voice, data, paging, access control, and emergency communications systems across campus.
Minimum Qualifications

  • At least two (2) years of telecommunications experience involving design, deployment, maintenance, and/or repair.
  • Fundamental knowledge of low-voltage systems, including voice, data, security, access control, grounding/bonding, and life-safety systems.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment.
  • Strong customer service and communication skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to troubleshoot and solve technical problems.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to lift up to 100 pounds
  • Use hand tools and power tools
  • Carry ladders ranging from 4-foot A-frame to 14-foot extension ladders
  • Work comfortably from ladders at heights ranging from 4 to 28 feet
  • Operate motorized lifts, bucket trucks, and related equipment
Preferred Qualifications

For consideration at the Expert Level, ideal candidates will demonstrate experience in one or more of the following areas:

  • Copper termination, testing, and labeling
  • Fiber termination, testing, and labeling
  • Voice and data communications
  • VoIP installation and programming
  • Elevator and fire alarm voice programming
  • BAS and DAS installation and maintenance
  • Card access systems
  • Paging systems
  • Outside plant fiber and copper infrastructure
  • Aerial fiber and copper infrastructure
Anticipated Hiring Range

The anticipated hiring range for this position has been established as up to $27.00 hour.

Salary is determined by a variety of factors, including but not limited to, the individual's particular combination of education, skills, and experience, as well as organizational requirements.

Your total compensation goes beyond the number on your paycheck. The University of Missouri provides generous leave, health plans, and retirement contributions that add to your bottom line.
