The Department of Classics and Ancient Studies at Santa Clara University, a Jesuit, Catholic university, seeks applicants for the Paul L. Locatelli, S.J. Assistant Professorship of Classics, a full-time endowed tenure-track position, with a start date of September 1, 2027. The incumbent will hold the title of Paul L. Locatelli, S.J. Assistant Professor for the duration of their probationary period, and will also have access to supplementary research funds. The department seeks a broadly trained teacher-scholar working in Latin literature and Roman culture within its wider global context. Applicants with research and teaching interests in interdisciplinary areas including, for example, gender and sexuality, race and ethnicity, ecocriticism, cognitive studies, economics and entrepreneurship, and reception will receive particular consideration, as will candidates who offer innovative ideas and/or a proven record of recruiting and retaining language students. The successful candidate will start on September 1, 2027 and be expected to teach, engage in scholarship, and do service for the department, college, University, and profession. SCU is on the quarter system and tenure-stream faculty are expected to teach six courses per year (two each quarter), assuming they are actively engaged in scholarship. The salary range for this position is $86,284-$95,901, depending on the successful candidate's years of teaching experience at the college level. Recognizing the high cost of housing in the local area, there are two University housing assistance programs: rental assistance to ease the transition into the local housing market, and housing purchase assistance for tenure-stream faculty.
