Job Summary

The role provides 24/7 operational, administrative, and fiscal leadership across the ED Trauma Technician, ED Optho Technician, ED Mental Health Workers (MHWs), and ED Phlebotomist teams. This position represents and acts on behalf of Nurse Managers in all trauma technician functions for the Emergency Medicine umbrella. Responsibilities include directing, planning, and monitoring clinical and technical operations, functions, and resources of the Emergency Department.

This position operates with a high degree of autonomy and accountability, exercising broad decision-making authority with minimal supervision to ensure all assigned programs remain compliant with Joint Commission, federal, state, and infection prevention standards, and are aligned with the strategic objectives of UC Davis Emergency Medicine
and UC Davis Health.

The role leads program development, quality improvement, and safety initiatives. It advances a therapeutic, trauma-informed, and patient-centered care model that supports UC Davis Health's mission, values, and long-term strategic plan.

Minimum Qualifications - For full consideration, applicants are encouraged to upload license and/or certification if required of the position

  • Obtain and maintain a current American Heart Association (AHA) Basic Life Support (BLS), American Red Cross Basic Life Support (BLS), or UC Davis Health CPR certification.
  • Licensed by the State of California as Certified Phlebotomy Technician
  • Bachelor's degree in related area and/or equivalent experience/training
  • At least three (3) years of recent supervisor/management experience.
  • Experience working in a health care institution or similar complex organization/industry.
  • Strong leadership and decision-making skills to evaluate program/staff needs, problem, train other staff.
  • Ability to research, collect, analyze and interpret data from a variety of sources.
  • Ability to identify and resolve problems/issues.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the internet to locate information, evaluate products, provide cost comparisons and download data. Ability to work independently, accurately and quickly on multiple assignments, with multiple deadlines, maintaining productivity and flexibility.
  • Knowledge and understanding of as well as the ability to interpret local, state and federal regulations (i.e., Joint Commission, Title XXII, CalOSHA, State Department of Health, State Fire Marshall and Infection Control Standards).
  • Must possess skills and abilities to recognize facility malfunctions or unsafe practices and have demonstrated ability to effectively communicate department needs.

Department Overview

Emergency Medicine provide Level 1 adult and pediatric trauma care for more than 33 of California's 58 counties. UC Davis Health System is home to state-of-the-art emergency care for children. Our Pediatric Emergency Department features the only Level 1 pediatric trauma center in inland Northern California (verified by the American College of
Surgeons). From Portland to Fresno, from outside the Bay Area to Reno, no other hospital in inland Northern California has a Level 1 adult and pediatric trauma center servicing approximately 70,000 patients each year.

The Department of Emergency Medicine at UC Davis provides a dedicated team of physicians, nurses, 42 residents, and a total of 26 specialists of every medical and surgical specialty to treat critically ill and injured adults and children. Our team provides an extraordinary level of knowledge, skill and compassion to every patient we serve at our Level 1 Surgery and Emergency Services Pavilion. The Emergency Department is prepared and equipped to provide comprehensive and efficient emergency care to patients in need of medical and surgical specialty physicians to treat critical and acute illnesses and injuries 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

Department Specific Job Scope

Responsibilities include directing, planning, and monitoring clinical and technical operations, functions, and resources of the Emergency Department. The incumbent leads administrative supervisory operations to senior trauma technician employees, trauma technicians, mental health workers, phlebotomists, and ophthalmology technicians.

The incumbent has oversight of human resources activities, leading the interview process and provides recommends, coordinates training, provides coaching, performance evaluation, disciplinary actions, completes forms and documents related to HR and Payroll units.
